Stihl 031AV electronic
« on: April 03, 2024, 01:26:51 AM »
Hi all

I recently found my grandfathers Stihl 031AV Electronic broken and all busted up. Mechanically speaking it's probably fine, it still is oily and sounds like it wants to fire up, still turns free...  although a family member seems to have cut down a tree on my property, dropped it wrong, and smashed it in a fit of rage.

The aluminum castings that holds the trigger and throttle and everything that makes it functional is just shattered.

To me it's an heirloom, but to the person who broke it it was just "dads"

Anyway

Are these still fixable? I've confiscated it... would love to have it restored... it's just one of those sound of my childhood...

Look for parts on Ebay

They made a lot of those, should be able to find a carcass to rob for the “crab shell” (handle frame) for next to nothing if you look around.  Since this model was discontinued in the 80s, most parts are no longer available. When I was in the saw repair business, the big one that sent most home in a box were failed ignition modules.I would recommend checking for spark and maybe pulling the muffler to make sure the rings are free if you want to fix it up.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Like Tuna said the big one is the ignition module. If it is dead you will have to find a used one and hope it still works or will not die soon. I believe my old man still has a 031 that just sits because the module is dead and he can not get a replacement that is worth taking the chance on.

There are a few different ignition modules on Amazon for the 031. I’m sure they are cheaply made but the price is right.

Years ago I ended up giving $100 for a used coil for a Husqvarna 181. It was my dad’s saw when he worked in the woods so I really wanted to keep it going. I happen to be looking for parts for it the other day and seen I could now buy a handful of them off  Amazon for that price now.
