Howdy. About to start scouting around the Olympics (GMU’s 638, 636, 618), mostly for elk. Any advice where NOT to bother? Trying to find places where you can get away from the crowd by hiking in deep. Don’t  want to go where the horse/orv guys and their wall tents will be.

636 is special permit only for elk… all are good for bear, I wouldn’t consider any for deer.

The other 2 are a brushy, thick mess at least on the public land portions. There’s some backcountry-ish opportunities in either. Never made sense to me in 638 because you can day hunt most of it easily. I’ve thought about it in 618 because there’s more roadless area, but haven’t been back very deep.

Elk are pretty sparse in both units - it can take a lot of work to get on them - way  more difficult than the timber co lands. Usually good animals when you find them though.
