10 to 1 they already have someone hand-picked for the job. The announcement is a formality.

Many on here wouldn’t be qualified. Most likely they are looking for a transgender.  :dunno:

Looks like they are after a Bio type for Region 5.  As others said I imagine they are planning to hire internally but still have to advertise.  Link to posting:

I can’t speak directly for WDFW but I’ve worked for IDFG and a number of other state and federal fish and wildlife agencies. I got a degree in wildlife ecology after my time in the military, and have worked a number of jobs that required my degree and paid $16-$18 an hour.

I can understand peoples frustration with state fish and wildlife agency’s, but know that some of us are diehard outdoorsman that are fighting the good fight. We only have so much power and reach on the bottom 2/3rds of the totem pole but we’re trying to represent our community as best we can.

Has nothing to do with trapping.  Have you seen the qualifications?
Here:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.
AND
Three (3) years of professional experience in one (1) or more of the following: Fish management or fish research. Wildlife management or wildlife research. Habitat management or habitat research. (Twelve semesters or eighteen-quarter hours of specific course work is required for certain positions).
OR , Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2.

They need a guy or gal that just came out of school.  Not one that has been in the field for 40 years and doesn't have a Bachelors Degree.
They need a young person so they can mold them.

I have tried Appling for jobs like this for USDA-APHIS-ADC years ago.  They don't need a trapper from the field, they need a book trained person.

Just my two cents.

Seems they have both a "Specialist" which requires a Biology degree, and a "Technician" which doesn't.  Interesting enough, it seems WDFW has gone full circle.  When my Father in Law George Brady got hired on, he initially started out as Wildlife Control. Any critters trapped and dispatched, they's put the fur up, send to auction and monies would go back to WDFW...When the dept merged the two-Control and Enforcement, they shifted much of the Wildlife control work to the private sector, AKA our current WCOs.

It's definitely an indicator of their struggles to deal with problem wildlife at the larger scale, such as dealing with farmers, ranchers, etc.  Plus given any government agency's administradium (much less WDFW) just doing the job at hand will be painful for the individual.  Plus in today's climate, finding a person that can actually do some of the stuff listed will be hard, much less how WDFW wants it.  THe end result is the landowner will just get even more frustrated when WDFW sends this person out with a clipboard and when everything is said and done has done nothing to remedy the situation.

You have my respect, Sir.

I met a crew of wardens (and USFS officer) in the deep woods last year, and gave the WDFW warden more than an earful about the commission.  I heard the "we agree with you, we are hunters as well..." portion, but I doubled down: "The commission is now structured to ignore the community, so the only way to hold the line is to use 'science' to rebut the current commission's stated objectives."  My point to the warden was this: They (you) are the only hope that we have now.  The legislature is one party in both houses, with the governor's mansion.  There are no dissenting voices in the power structure.  As you said, the bottom 2/3 of the totem pole has to play the "scientific evidence" card.  There is simply no other alternative left.

I felt bad, I know that I was too harsh to the warden.  If you read this, please accept my apologies for the harsh words.

It’s a tough position to fight from unfortunately. Raise too much stink and you’ll find yourself on the curb. Rumor mill from some former colleagues is that a lot of Colorado’s fish and wildlife professionals lost their careers when they stood up against the reintroduction of wolves. Leaves people feeling like their only choice is to try to make marginal changes or risk finding yourself in a position where you can’t make any.
