We hunted southwest of Big Hole last year and the hunting was great.....durring archery season.  Went back during the general season and didn't see one elk.  The deer populations really sucked where we were.  We hunted anywhere from 6000 to 10000 feet.  During archery season it wasn't uncommon to have 3-5 bulls answer are calls at a time.  I only saw 3 other camps and never another hunter while in the woods.  I will go back for archery..one of these days.  Will never hunt that area durring the general hunt again.  Oh Yeah, there were lots of wolves.  But there was also lots and lots of land and even more elk.  Good Luck.

i guide over there, in the bitteroot. There is some decent hunting, and weve never had a huge issue with wolves. They are there alright, but its not bloody murder like some would have you believe. unit 270 has some pretty decent general hunts, but its a draw for deer. if you hunt there, its nice to get some pics of some real hogs. quite a bit of sheep pic opps too. The west fork root has some good hunting but the elk herd is a little more sparsley populated than the east fork. arouind nine mile before you get to the zoo(missoula) has good elk and whitetail hunting... Laird creek is a good spot to start out.

My brother lives over there in the Conner/Sula area.  He says they are around, but not necessarily thick yet.
