North Chelan Mountain Goat

Anyone on here know why there's no North Chelan (2-1 and 2-3) Mountain Goat tags being offered for special tags this year? I may have missed it because the map shows the areas but the list of tags doesn't show any tags available. I assume the Mountain Goat numbers are pretty bad but someone on here may know for sure. It seems like the Wolves over the last several years, could have made quick work of the few Goats left during the winter and spring before the Goats head back into their summer range.

That goes for all goat units Nannie’s are a no no. It’s the quickest way to get a unit shut down.

The goat numbers are horrible there but then so are the deer numbers. that Navarre pack hangs out there

The last year the tag was open we had zero issues finding goats. I mean zero there were in what I like to call “way the f@@k “ up there but we found them and  the tag holder had a great hunt I know I’ll never forget it. Hope tag comes back for some lucky folks

More like cougars 24/7 than some one shooting a Nanny.

Look what happened to the goat rocks population after cougar hunting with dogs was shutdown. Granted you couldn't use dogs in the wilderness, but you could all around it. Was 5 goat tags now one west and east

There are a lot of good articles out there why you shouldn’t be shooting nannies why it’s hard on the population.

If you look back through harvest stats the Chelan tags on average have fewer females killed than other units
Not saying that it's  not a problem..it's just not a profound problem in the Chelan units ...it's also actually really disappointing to see on average half the goats killed in WA are females
I was also a little shocked to see allot of tags go unfilled and to see the hunter average days in the single digits.
Like who gets an oil tag and spends 2 days trying to fill it...your either in or your out...

I think a lot of people just throw out a random number on the days spent hunting. I have a hunch the posted numbers arent real accurate.

I guess I'm completely lost. First off, I never would have thought shooting a nanny was an issue and if a hunter ends up with a "once in a lifetime tag," wouldn't the average hunter put every possible moment into fulfilling a "once in a lifetime dream?" Seriously, my wife would end up calling the authorities and the search and rescue team would get tired of looking for me.

Been a few since I have been in there but I had the goat rocks tag a few years back.  There were litterly hundreds of goats in the little area I was in. They were everywhere and finding a billy was no issue.

I'm not sure how much I trust the published harvest statistics. I killed my goat in 2019 (a billy). In 2021, the published harvest stats for my goat unit in 2019 recorded my goat as a nanny (it was the only tag in the unit). I emailed the bio about this (he and I had been in frequent contact before, during, and after my hunt) and he said he had no idea why it was recorded as a nanny in the published harvest stats, but not to worry because he and the other bios have a different data source they use for their work, and in that database - it's recorded as a billy 

The tagholder the year before me (2018) had also killed a billy (again, only tag in the unit)...and that goat was also mis-recorded in the published stats as a nanny.

Anyway, that experience rocked my faith in the published reports' reliability, especially for goats.

Was on the this hunt 2 years prior to it going away. There was a very good number of goats. Rumor has it the next year a Wdfw employee had the tag and apparently didn’t even see a goat. We went on two trips. The first trip we saw lots of goats but most were high in inaccessible areas. The second trip later in November the goats by no means were low but obtainable. It’s all weather dependent on when and where there going to be. I truly believe the raffle and governor tags are what caused the downfall in goat numbers.
