sheep special permit question
« on: May 14, 2024, 06:36:12 PM »
In the 2024 big game regulations I picked  up today. On page 78, it shows that Umtanum is listed as #5 to include 51 and 52, whatever that means. So I go back to page 75, I see no 5, 51 or 52. Or anything that lists Umtanum. Does that mean that there is no hunt for that unit? Also on page 78, there is a listing for Selah butte, but again on pages 75 and 76 there are no places listed showing that there is a hunt choice for that unit.. Same thing with Sinlahekin! So my question is, why did they put these in there at all? I havn't figured out why this is like this. It has all changed from last year. I noticed there were other ones listed like 22 Black Butte. Why does it seem so confusing to me? I assume that this is a big screwup and there will be some kind of correction come out after the draw has been done.  Beyond that, can anyone help me with questions like, Are there still a good number of adult rams on Cleman mountain. Is Quilomene only a boat show to get there? How bout Swakane, does it have easy access with good numbers of rams, and any other questions that you may be able to help me with. Thanks in advance.

These are the sheep special permits.

I believe my post shows the available hunts this year and Bob’s post shows the hunt units/boundaries. No Umtanum or Selah Butte hunts this year.

They got the cough and all died won’t be a hunt in those units for a long time.

This for sure, but they’ve had it in there for quite a few years now. Did it suddenly kill a bunch of them recently or has this just been building up over time?

There are many sheep units in the state that have historically had tags and for whatever reason wdfw has decided they can’t currently sustain any hunting take. Predation, pneumonia whatever. Mt Hull, Vulcan mt,  Sinlehekin etc. That doesn’t mean they won’t ever have a tag again just not this year. The unit boundaries are still listed in the Regs.

Umtanum and Selah Butte are not listed as available hunts this year because WDFW is actively pursuing a different management strategy for the Bighorn's in the canyon. It is true that the herd in the Yakima Canyon has had M. ovi for several years, Cleman's herd just recently came down with the pneumonia in 2020/2021. I imagine once they have completed the new Test & Cull study and can comfortably allocate tags again, we will see these hunts back in the regs.

Not to mention all the ones they collard with collars that were too small.  There was mortality over that as well.
