It’s been a few days and I’m still in shock. After I didn’t draw Montana I had a feeling my 15 points for quality elk had potential. I’ve hiked sawtooth and had some cams in there for a summer. I’ve read all the previous years threads on the unit and I know there’s quite a few people on this forum that are a wealth of knowledge on the subject of hunting world class bull elk in the Wenaha.
I used to hunt the lick creek  for 10 years back when antlerless was an otc option so I know how to hunt that steep of terrain.

Teanaway hunt is in November, so is basically on the back burner. I don’t know a ton about this hunt. I drove the unit last year during rifle opener and liked what I saw. I didn’t anticipate drawing considering I only had a few points.

I can’t wait!

Congrats I had 12 and was trying for that weneha tag.  Take the west butte trail out of godman campground and follow it down to the bottom you'll find elk in the whole valley down there. Just know that the only roads are up on the top and all the elk are down in the valley bottoms .  Every day will be a drop down and chase , or spike in to the bottoms which I would have done.

Congrats. I had that tag in 2015, that unit will humble you. Not sure what the wolf situation is these days but I heard they’re thick any elk numbers are lower. There seemed to be an abundance of elk everywhere in 2015. I was in elk daily off of sawtooth so I didn’t move far from that ridge, ended up killing my bull in the bottom between buck ridge and sawtooth. Scouting and cameras will give you an inventory of bulls in the area but once the rut hits they move a lot. Get in the best mountian shape you can,  hunt hard and stay out from sunrise to sunset would be my advice. Never know when that mid day bugle will pop off.

Correction**looks like I’ve got the Dayton tag. Not Wenaha. What a roller coaster.
