Game Bird Sellers
« on: July 22, 2024, 05:44:48 PM »
Hello All,

I am working on training my newly acquired 6-month old Weimaraner pup to hunt upland game and am looking for places in western wa that sell game birds for dog training purposes. Anybody have any connections or people they would recommend? TIA!

If you have space quail are easy to raise from a catalog order.

I unfortunately don't have space and it is against the HOA I live in to raise poultry.

Sounds like you bought in the wrong area! Lol. HOAs are seldom a good thing. Where in western WA are you located? There are a coupe NAVHDA groups that doo training days, trial preps, etc. They often have "left over" birds or the opportunity to purchase birds when they place orders. Craigslist has them (lots of coturnix quail) occasionally more advanced gamebirds as well. I have raised thousands of gamebirds but did not renew any of my licenses this year. Best of luck with the pup!

I am in Mason County. I have checked craigslist near me but doesn't seem like there is much around. I have been considering contacting the nearest NAVHDA group just to figure out how to do things.

Snow mountain has quail right now, I think they were asking $7-8 per bird.  I'll be picking some up for the pups to play with in a few weeks if still available.   They have FB also and Brian is a great guy.  Have purchased birds and other dog training supplies in the past.

Maybe Whistling Wings HRC has a connection? I havent worked with them before, but they put on dog training days for the members, I assume they have a connection, or a member has a connection to live birds for training.
What country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants.

Where are you in the training process? Would coturnix quail work for you (not good flyers at all) fun for pups to play with and do leave a good scent if that is the focus. They are cheap and can be found fairly local if on FB there is a Washington State Coturnix Quail Group, you can find them on there I'm sure. If you're further along in training chukar would be my choice, if you can find them, the NAVHDA group is probably your best bet. Western WA does not have many gamebird breeders as it is an EXPENSIVE hobby (don't ask how I know but my feed bill was more than my mortgage for a good part of the year). You will likely need to travel a bit to find birds. Remember birds make good bird dogs and the investment will pay out for years per plan.

I think they are still laying, if so I have eggs you can have. Georgia Giants aren't the best for dog training though.
