Chiwawa Ridge wolf on cam

Probably a young member of the Maverick Pack. However, could be Napeequa pack member as well. Chiwawa Ridge certainly qualifies as a boundary.

It was quite the rodeo Saturday night swinging in my hammock in the gale at 5,000 feet elevation. The electrical storm between 9:00PM and 1:00AM... let me put it this way; St Elmos fire and hair standing on end is an indicator that perhaps one is too close to nature in this peculiar form. Lesson learned. At least the cabin didn't burn to the ground in the Shugart Flats area. BLM and FS got that fire put out pretty damn quick. THANK YOU. The Insurance companies would've raise bloody hell if 350+ homes had burnt to ashes in the Lake Wenatchee area. Just. Guessing!

Note: I need to change the year to 2024 on this unit. It shows 2023. The joys of retirement. I sometimes don't know the day, month or year. Guess there are worse things to be afflicted with.

Interesting colors on that one, I haven't seen the red on them that I can recall. Lightning storms are a whole other thing up in the high country, glad you made it unscathed.

I was close to you Saturday night.  7,400' ridge just south of Seven Fingered Jack (between LeRoy and Phelps).

There were 3 distinct waves (cold fronts) that blew through that night, starting about 21:30 and ending early Sunday about 01:30.

I thought we were a goner.  The tent (SO Cimmaron) miraculously withstood the fury of Father Zeus.

Interesting colors on that one, I haven't seen the red on them that I can recall. Lightning storms are a whole other thing up in the high country, glad you made it unscathed.

Agreed. I at first thought it could be the young age of the wolf that explains the red color. Then, later thought it might be a wolf X coyote hybrid cross. I'm no trained biologist so I be brutally honest, I really don't know. I captured 30 seconds of great video of this animal. I wish I could learn to compress the video down to the file size limitation on this site. It's really interesting to watch the behaviors. Still images are fine, but video -I'm learning- really captures more behaviors.

Yes, close you were. I kept watching and listening to the lightening strikes and thunder boomers toward Maude and along the Entiat divide. Was wondering how many climbers and others were exposed over there. On Sunday our party called in a single burning Doug Fir on Crook Mountain. Not an hour later here came the jet spotter aircraft and later a helo. Those fire fighting boys were busier than a one legged man in an ass kickin' contest!

Definitely has his summer coat on. That red color will change as its gets it’s winter coat.

Thank You for the advice and suggestion. I'll give it a try. My Browning cams take high quality 30 second to one minute videos. The downside is large files in the 25MB size. First world problems! Gotta love it.

Cool shot. Nice coat on that pup. Frustrating to see ahead of my late hunt but certainly not unexpected.

We were at our south shore cabin over the weekend and got to experience the storm from our sleeping porch. It was a first for my two toddlers. Can't imagine what that was like from your hammock! Mother Nature sure is an unstoppable force when she wants to be.

On another note, thanks for sharing your trail cam pics. I always get excited when I see you've got a new thread up. The Chiwawa is a special place.

You are very welcome. It is my pleasure to share. Good luck on the late hunt. Those migrators, in my humble opinion, although few and rare to see in the 160-180+ class do exist. As you know it's a patient mans game. The worse the weather (deep snow on the PCT early) makes for perfect hunting conditions.

Looks like we are damn near neighbors! I live at Lake Wenatchee too. Maybe we know each other as its a rather small town and I have gotten to know many people around here through being on with LWFR.

I spotted what I believe to be wolf tracks up near D Lake in the GP Wilderness this past week. I was up there for the high buck (no success). Are you familiar with this area? If we need to take it offline, let me know but as a relatively new local (been full time here for 4 years) I would love to chat with you about our local areas!

Yup, familiar with it. Upper Y creek basin is interesting. D lake is beautiful, see attached.
