Margaret Access for 2009
«
on:
June 18, 2009, 08:24:33 AM »
I was hoping someone would have an idea of what gates will be accessable for Margaret this year. I finally pulled a cow tag. I believe the season there starts on the 19th for cows. I was there with a buddy in '07, and I think we went up the 2500, but that was on a Sat. Will the gates be open there during the week, and if so, any ideas on which ones?
(not looking for anyone's honey holes, i have a pretty good idea where to go once I'm in.)
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

The last time we had a tag in there was 2003 and we had to drive across from the 1900 to get in there. None of the gates farther up the highway were open even on the weekend. As far as i know they haven't been opening any of those gates in recent years either.

We might have hit it just right then. There was a check point at the gate, not sure if it was "The eyes in the woods" guys or not. Thanks for the reply!

Actually I would bet the 2500 and maybe a couple others ill be open.Been pretty good cooperation between EIW and Weyco.
Hell, for a cow up there i would just pick one out from the hiway.and get off it far enough to be legal.
Bring enough mule tape to pull it out.Shouldnt much more than a 100 yards or so.

I am pretty sure that the weekends are all you are going to get if you want to drive. I think if i had a cow tag i would just stick to the anyway, no sense in making a cow any harder that you have to unless you are like me and love the hunt just as much as the meat. If you just want to fill the tag, there are more than enough elk there that road hunting for a cow would be more than sufficient. Prepare for them being closed during the week, that way if they are open then your in luck.

Thanks for all the good info...
furbearer365 -
LOVE
the hunt! I'm origionally from Nebraska and would walk miles just for a couple Pheasants in some REALLY cold temps. Of course I was younger and * A LOT * dumber back then. I actually prefer to get away from the roads a bit, so a locked gate is not a problem. I'm more concerned about getting her out. I understand there were 70 tags this year for cows, but hope several folks hold out until Sat. I'm hittin' it first thing on the opener (Thursday).

The 2500 will probably be open. Others might be too but they don't always say that on the recording. The only way to know for sure is to drive to the gates and see. That's what happen to me last year as I had a Margaret tag.
