Why I took up bow hunting
«
on:
June 18, 2009, 04:17:45 PM »
One of my last years of rifle hunting - shortly before converting to bowhunting. I might cut off my finger with a broadhead but at least I won't slice my forehead open with a scope anymore.
Oh, before anyone asks, NO, I don't hunt with that thing in my ear. That's the thing you stick in your ear after you shoot a small buck so that you can tell your buddy to show up with a packboard and a box of Band-Aids and waste half a day getting your deer out - all the while whining that you just shot a little one. Oh well, it's payback for the many times that I was the pack mule.
Any similar stories out there?

Ouch. Nice deer though, sorry nothing to add as far as scope bites.

standard deer - I was just looking through photos today and found this. Remembered thinking that it was pretty funny (and I was pretty dumb) at the time. My hunting partner's first question was "did you shoot yourself or the deer?"

Nice buck! At least bowhunting won't do that to your forehead:) You may slice your finger or bow slap your arm, but not your head:)

HAhaha too funny. I've been there, only at the range thouugh. Anyone who has been shooting scoped rifles for anytime as done something like that, makes for classic trophy pics though!

I got myself with a buddy's 300 win mag. Never shot one before and haven't since. Funny thing was we were just about to leave for a readiness inspection in a couple days. I had a nice little mark for the whole thing. Had some giggles from guys that knew exactly what I did.

Atleast you are smiling...
I have still yet to get scoped, ever....(knock on wood)....I shoot a 300 Ultramag and imagine the damage would be pretty good.... How do you guys do that?

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

I did it in a situation where the sun was starting to set and was trying to get farther into the scope to minimize glare, but I just got myself bad enough to get a little black eye - no cut though.

Both my brothers have done it. Hope it never happens to me. I would never live it down after all the crap I gave them.

Boy, that's a really nice.........scope bite.
At least you hit the deer. Of course, from now on you're gonna' flinch every time you shoot a rifle.

I never have been scoped like that but I did take a guy out that had never shot a rifle before. He kept telling me that he couldn't see anything through the scope. Then he says, "now I see the pop can". BOOM and down goes dads 30-30 lever action to the ground. Good lesson for anyone that is trying to teach someone how to shoot. Make sure their face isn't too close.
