Margaret bull permit

I would like to see any picts. of any past margaret bull hunts. I drew a Margaret A rifle permit  Nov. 7-17.  Any advice

I have gotten alot of advice on where to hunt. Is it the toutle side of Margaret or the Randle end off 26   It has been a big debate.

A good place to start scouting is up off the 2612, up by Ryan Lake.  There is a washout on the 2612 but it is passable.  You'll have to get across the Green river.  With the heat that we will have this summer.  The ELK are going to be up and back in the draws that stay cool

I've never drawn a Margaret tag, but have tried many times.  My plan has always been to get a camping permit and hunt the Back Country and the north facing slope above the Green River across from Goat Mtn.  I've hunted the Winston, Packwood, Lewis, and the old Marble units all around the Margaret and hiked the Loo-Wit and Margaret units.  I've seen sizable 6 and 7 points on the eastern and northern end of the unit.  Where you hunt will depend largely on how you want to camp.  If you want to camp near a road, then I'd be along the 2612 and use Trail 213 to move west.  But its all uphill, everday, from there.  There is a road (the # of which I don't know) that bi-sects that north facing slope above the Green River. That might provide good hiking access for that steep slope.

I've attached some photos of the Back Country from June, 2007, taken along Boundary Trail 1, so you can see the terrain, if you've not been there. BT 1 is part of the southern boundary of the Margaret in that area.  These photos are just south of the Margaret but are representative of the area. The elk were mostly 5 points that day. The lake in the photo is St. Helens lake. The BT 1 trail passes through a natural rock arch, which is worth the hike.

Here is a picture taken by Dean44 and posted in the "Washington: Where am I?" photo game in the general discussion forum.  The picture is taken from Goat Mtn. looking south across the Green River at the Backcountry.  The slope in the main of the picture is the north facing slope I referenced in my earlier post, showing the logging roads that bisect the slope.

littlebuf - post some pictures - i still want to see this monster.  I have seen some big bulls up there, but that was all 15 years ago, when I was in high school.  I have only been up there once since 2000.

i hadn't talked to him in a while and apparently he' going through kind of a nasty divorce/separation thing ( i try to stay out of details) but there's kids involved also so digging up picks for me probably isn't real high on the priority list, i didnt even ask and if he's moved he might not even have the mount any more witch would be pretty sad also, if i can get a pick i will, i haven't forgotten

I would go in a bit farther south than the 2612.  Take the Nordic trail in, it takes you past Grizzly lake, and on into the other lakes and valleys there.

Huntbear, I think you mean the Norway Pass Trailhead, to the Lakes Trail...

Another thing that you'll need to consider about hunting up there is the amount of snow in mid-November that you may encounter...It could be pretty substantial.

I have followed this site for quite sometime but never logged in before. With that said my 13 year old son had this permit last year and we had a great time. I spent a lot of time in there last year and unless you have alot of time, strong back or several guys willing to pack, Norway Pass will be very tough. No animals allowed to pack and you will have to hike in for several hours and then pack out on your own. There are some very nice bulls in there but it will be VERY tough to get them out. We hunted from the other side and saw plenty of bulls. We only saw a couple of really nice bulls but there are alot of decent bulls in there. However, you might need to get out of the pickup and hunt. I would be glad to give you some advice on places to start and you should have a great hunt, just don't get in a hurry. There are also a few canyons that I am sure that if you went down in you would find tons of elk and some nice bulls.
