Hunting from the ground in the dark
« on: October 22, 2024, 09:23:02 AM »
I have more than a few times walked in in the dark and set up to sit for a while only to find i have 0 visibility or some other thing that makes me stand out once light starts to come on.  I always second guess whether to make a quick move and risk spooking close by deer or just wait it out until I know there’s a lull and accept I’m not in an ideal spot.

Scouting out and preparing a stand ahead of time eliminates that problem. If you don't have time to do that pre-season, do it during the middle of the hunting day. Find a likely spot with cover. Trim your shooting lanes with pruning shears. Waypoint the spot and you'll be able to walk in and settle in the dark.

Pianoman is spot on.

If I plan on hunting this way, I always walk and note as many areas as possible during the daylight. That way there is no guessing.
If you can't do it during pre-season, do it while you're hunting.
