ft.lewis???

Hey i am interested in hunting ft.lewis i was wondering if anyone has had any success and or any photos of bucks!

i know a guy that hunts it every year, he's done pretty well as far as success goes but none of the bucks are going to break any records

I do alot of logging on ft. lewis and thier is some real nice bucks in certain areas. a couple of times i had to look twice to make sure they weren't crossed up with a muley. But for the most part those are few and far between.

There may still be some black/mule/white crosses on base.

There is some good hunting on Fort Lewis, I retired out of there live on the back side in Roy. I have seen some dandy bucks out there, have you gone over to Northwest Adventure Center and looked at some of the pics they have on the wall??

dint you need permission to hunt on fort lewis? the guy i know used to be the range officer and gets into areas that are usually closed to the public. at least that's what i thought

First you need to Northwest Adventure Center on North Fort. You will watch a 20-30 min video and register for hunting on post. Also if you are rifle or muzzy hunting you will need to register your firearms with the MP station. They have all the paperwork there at the NAC. I've been stationed at Ft Lewis for 7 years and I have seen some brutes while training.

i think the toughest part about getting for lewis access is just getting through the gate -- you have to either have someone on active duty sponsor you or fill out a form online and jump through some hoops.

Dont waist your time unless your go early archery.
Rifle season they let 1000 people "register" to hunt then you need to call in the day prior, and hope your area is open. If it is you need to hope it's not filled with people. The order of presidence goes Active duty (they can sign up 1.5 days early) then retired, then civilians.
I have watched it closely, and there is about 15-30 bucks pulled each yr from various areas (this yr was less than 15). About half WILL go book. The others are does and spikes. I've seen 6x5's, HUGE 4x4's, 5x5's, droptines, crazy mass, then weird little bucks in there, and all the likes, but its flat and brushy, and llots of pressure from army movments, poachers, and hunters.
Most use stands, as it is difficult to spot and stalk.
Most days you wont see deer, as they have a big poaching problem, other days you may see a doe, then if your lucky....
Best we ever did was see to whopper bucks back to back in area 10, but the wifey couldnt find em in here scope.

I have since then got the skook pegged for some decent bucks, and now drive farther and have more fun if that says anything!

Yep, my old taxidermist used to take in monster bucks from the fort.

I was driving by the fort this morning coming back from a long night in Portland for a Bachelor party and saw a dead buck next to the median. I believe he already had at least 4 points on one side. Which I was suprised this early! Seen some pictures of big bucks come out of there and after seeing that buck this morning I would definately give it a try!

I used to hunt the fort about 8-10 years ago. Before the 911 stuff and you did not have to register a firearm. However I did have to go through the 20 minute safety video and let them know what area I was going to be in. If you change areas, you are supposed to go clear back to the adventure center and remove your name from one area  to go to another area. That's kind of a hasle. From the years that I have hunted the fort, and since I don't hunt it any more, the secret that I have found is the central impact area. The last weekend of modern rifle, all the fireing ranges are closed. The ranges form kind of a horse shoe and the center of the ranges is called the centeral impact area. There is several acres to this area. The deer that are in there are used to gun fire ALL years long. They are fairly used to vehicle and person traffic also. The deer are warry but not spooky. There are some nice deer on the fort. At the adventure center I have seen pictures of bear that have come off the fort. Ther are some really nice pictures of the buck that have come off the fort at the adventure center. If memory serves me correctly, you go to the main gate exit and go west of I-5. Take the first left and go down that road maybe 1/4 mile and you will run right into it. The only thing that I don't like when hunting the fort, is that your movement is very limited. Oh!,  Also...you are not allowed to pick up ANYTHING that you may find while hunting. Whatever you might find. I have found some pretty cool stuff laying around in the grass and under trees.
