First Camera---Still or Video?????

Hey Guys,

I am just getting started in this whole trail cam thing. I bought a Moultrie D-40 (I know, not the greatest but I am just trying this out). Is there any thing to consider when choosing between still photo and videos. I have the 2GIG flash with it. I want to have it just take videos, but I am curious about night time??? Would you go right to video or would you go with still photo's right out the gate?

Any input would be appreciated.

One other question as well. I put new batteries in this thing, but probably wont put it out in the woods until next weekend. Do you find that the batteries run out even if the camera is off?

I'm no trail cam expert but I run a few D40 cameras on my camera line. I tried the video thing. IMHO the video is cool during the day but It will only take 1 snap shot at night. I found it was allways a bad shot. and couldn't see much. the day video is cool though.

I set all my cameras to 3 shots and have the flash to auto.
Remeber the best pics will be up close and don't shoot across a trail. you will need to shoot it down a trail. about 15' is my best pics

    I seem to get about 3 to 4 weeks out of my battery life, also make sure you don't have a bunch of brush or branches that move in the wind or you will have 900 pic's of them  Not that I have done that or anything  .

I have 3 D40s and for the money, no complaints Mark Heres a shot from last week.

I have a moultrie also not a d-40 but the video mode sucks. It will take videos in the day time but then it switches to still at night. I used one of my cameras on video when I found the cougar kill and got a bunch of video of a turkey vulcher and then the memory was full, because the video mode won't accept a sd card (at least on my camera).

You will soon realize if you use the cam enough that its worth it to pay the extra and get a I 40, they will pay for themselves in a year just in Batt cost, much better cam, never have to worry about them dying
