Otters

Anyone have an otter try and take their fish? As I was reeling in a little trout today, one popped its head up and starting coming towards the kayak.

I had one steal my duck once.  They can be very aggressive.

A couple years ago on the skagit steelhead fishing the water started churning below me out of nowhere, I was wonder what the heck is going on, it roared from the middle of the river makings it’s way to the opposite side, all of a sudden 3 otters popped out dragging what looked to be an 8-10 lb steelhead, they devoured it in what seemed like an instant and rolled back into the river. It was pretty crazy to see.

Heard stories of them swiping fish from stringers at Offut

I was trout fishing on Offut Lake a few years ago, we were told not to use a live stringer. That's all I had with me; I had 5 nice fish on the stringer. When I went to put one more on, nada just heads and scraps.

I had  taken by one too, once. It was a huge surprise to me at the time.

Yes.  A few years ago I was fishing off the public fishing dock on Long lake in kitsap county. I caught a ~3lb largemouth bass.  An otter appeared and attacked the fish as I was reeling it in. The otter bit a chunk out of the fish's kill plate. Once I got the fish up on the dock the otter swam around, waiting for me to throw the fish back I think.  I carefully released it away from the otter.

A little while later, I was reeling in my spinnerbait, and the otter started chasing the spinnerbait.  I did figure-8's with the lure beside the dock while the little otter chased it for several minute. I've got a video of it somewhere.

After a while the otter caught some other little fish, perch or chad or something, and ate them near us.

Not fish but I have had otters raid my crawdads pots.

Next time an otter lays chase to yer fish, just pretend yer at Bouy10.

I had one steal a steelhead from me once. I had gutted it and pulled it up well on the gravel bar and continued fishing. Looked back just in time to see the bugger disappear under the water with the fish. Weirdest thing was he was using the 'fish carrier' handle I had threaded through the mouth/gill.

Wild! What kind of duck was it? Were you on fresh or salt water? I've seen otters while duck hunting tidal rivers, but haven't seen one go after a duck. That's cool.

Had them mess with my decoys once, it was funny to watch.

We've got a pond on our property.  I had bass and perch in it up until a few years ago when 5 otters came in and cleaned house over the course of about 1 week.
