7 years in the making
« on: December 27, 2024, 03:18:57 PM »
I didn’t grow up with hunting, and have learned a lot from people on these boards. Met some great people off these boards too. But I have been hunting hard for 7 years trying to get my first blacktail buck. After a lot of failure I finally had success, I know these animals far better then I did 7 years ago. I passed on 3 smaller bucks waiting for a minimum of a 3 point to come in. I had a half day available in December on the weekend. I was in my tree stand, and around 8:45 in the morning a nice buck came in chasing a doe. I waited for an opportunity and it didn’t take long. I took my time but it felt like a flash, didn’t focus on antlers after I saw it met my minimum.

Let loose the arrow, it went all the way through. At the time I wasn’t sure if I missed as he didn’t lunge he just ran fast. Waited about an hour for the does to leave and then climbed down and checked the arrow and saw blood and chunks of meat on the foliage. Took me about 15 minutes to track him he was in deep black berries. Hands down one of the coolest experiences I have ever had hunting. Is he the biggest buck ever? Nope, but for my first buck ever I am incredibly thankful.

Yeah, I had to edit them on the PC because it was posting them sideways. Added to the post now though!

That’s even harder yet the bucks just seem to disappear after the rut.

I was watching them on trail cams, they seem to do a big circle looking for does. Every 5-6 days they would show up for 2 days and then gone again. Except the giant 4x5 he came in a total of 2 times all season and never showed up again. He's an absolute tank though.

Hey Bogie. It was great meeting you the other day and talking stories a bit with you. After talking with you it is clear you put in the work and persistance pays off. Congrats again on your deer and keep up the hard work. I see success in many ways in your future hunting trips with your outlook on hunting these grey ghosts.

Congrats on your buck way to stay with it and get it done. Those lack berries are an obnoxious plant. Once they start dropping their berries or they are eaten by birds and animals the seeds are spread everywhere. I spray them before they infest the spots I visit regularly.

Congrats on a great 1st blacktail buck! They are the toughest to hunt. I also connected on my 1st archery blacktail this year. I've taken many over the years with guns and muzzleloader. There's something to be said for a blacktail buck with a bow.

Hunting blacktail in the Himalayan blackberry thicket, with a bow, is the very best!  And tracking really requires patience (it is even worse when the rain washes away the blood track).  Good job, Mister, let's see if you can control your nerves until next season rolls around!!

I don’t blame you, I have brush pants and the deer seem to love them. So I just bring a brush cutter and do it by hand where I need to.

Congrats to you as well! They are tough no matter what it seems. But I definitely saw more activity with bow then I have with modern rifle or muzzy this year. I had multi season and hunted all of it that I could.

It really is fun, the surprising thing was there wasn’t much blood to track. A few drops here and there. But the next week I was wishing we were allowed two tags a year lol. Already been out scouting new areas. Getting prepped for next season.
