New guy, Old Dog
« on: June 24, 2009, 06:07:48 PM »
Hi, newbie here.  I stumbled across this site today.  Excellent!  I moved to Tacoma a few years ago from Vancouver, WA.  I still hunt Klickitat and central OR. for chukars and huns (my favorite birds to hunt) because I know the areas well, but being on the westside up here, I'm wanting to hunt this year north of Vantage to the Grand Coulee.  Only problem is, my brittany is now 12 and is finally slowing down.  So, I'm thinking these next couple of years I should just focus on flatland quail and pheasants so I can still get him out.  He's good for a couple hours on flat land no problem.

If you were in my shoes, would you focus on quail north of Vantage or hunt the Yakima reservation?  I don't really know where to start in either location.  Any help is appreciated.

Haven't hunted the rez for a while but I like the area closer to Grand Coulee and banks lake for quail.

fethrduster,

Try the areas around Moses Lake and Potholes. The land does go up and down (sand hills), but for an older dog it may not be bad. Sometimes you do have to put some miles on the boots, because the birds can get water anywhere, but there are birds there. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Chris
