Garmin speed-over-water sensor
« on: May 11, 2025, 02:12:06 PM »
I'm trying to find a speed-over-water sensor, the wheel and attachments for a Garmin Echomap UHD2 94SV.  According to the Garmin rep they do not supply those but they "should" be available from an after market supplier and it would hook up to the NM2000 port.  So far I've been unable to find anything like that.  Does anyone have any knowledge of this or know of a direction to point me?

I used to have a wheel sensor but was underwhelmed from the performance.  It needs to be mounted with the bottom portion of the wheel below the hull or it won't work at all which means it is subject to high speed runs where that tiny little wheel turns at mach 19 as well as all the junk in water that can jam or slow the wheel.  It didn't last too long and was intermittently working when it did.

Even when it did work, surface speed differs substantially from where you are fishing unless you are in the top portion of the water.

The best idea I have seen lately is the sensor attached to downriggers, but the cost seems to greatly exceed any benefit from the data that I can think of.

At some point I think smart software engineers will figure out how to calculate water speed at any depth from sonar data, but not today - at least in the affordable recreational market.

If you really want one I think this Lowrance one is still available from a couple of places:
