Missoula Fishing
« on: June 05, 2025, 02:22:47 PM »
Howdy fellas, going to Missoula for a music festival weekend of the 4th of July. I'd like to spend an afternoon fishing somewhere within an hour of Missoula. Any suggestions? I used to drive truck south towards lolo and hamilton and would always eyeball the bitterroot. Any suggestions? Thanks! Fish on brother

I'm aware of the clark fork,  but wouldn't have the first idea of what stretch to go. I know it's popular for the rafting around that time

My aunt lives in missoula. About 20 years ago I fished the Clark fork. She lives on the river. I just grabbed a bunch of spinners she had laying in her shed. I would catch a trout About every cast. They were really nice trout too. All were minimum 2lbs or bigger. Also while I was in the river fishing I looked down and there were crawdads all over. I grabbed a bunch of those and cooked them up with the trout. They were the biggest dad's I had ever seen. They were like lobsters compared to the ones I seen in Washington. Don't know if it is still as good but there are lots of places to fish along the river.

Rock creek. There is a flyshop as well and a place to grab food. Go 25 miles up past bitteroot flat camp ground and fish the microburst in the hogbacks. Absolutely amazing. Go every year

Clark fork out Missoula, don't remember exactly where but there are a number of parks and access points along the freeway.  I didn't fish this spot, but it looks fishy to me.

Plenty of public fishing spots heading south out of Missoula on 93. I’ve never fished them but they look awesome. Several fly shops along the route as well that will most likely point you in a good direction.

You can watch the raft parade on 93.
Every other car is towing a raft.
It's amazingly crowded.

Fly fishing?

The Gallatin River or Rock Creek.
Rock Creek will take more than an hour of driving to get to the good stuff but it’s good stuff. It’s not really prime time so the fishing won’t be as good as it gets in either place.

Just getting back around to this. Thank you all for the replies. I think ill be headed in the right direction once I freshen up on the regs over that way.  Think im just gonna take a little ultralight spin rod. Ive always liked using a clear water bobber with a fly dangling from a few feet of leader, pack a few spinners too. Haven't fly fished for years. Keep telling myself to get back into it. Ive been watching this guy on youtube (Hartman fishing) a bit. This video he catches a big ole spawning nook way up river somewhere   pretty entertaining. He also catches some big musky back east on big streamers. Pretty cool. Art and therapy all in one.
