Vashon Island deer tag
« on: June 12, 2025, 07:21:31 AM »
Just drew a second deer tag for Vashon Island, that runs from Aug 1 - Dec 31, and have a multi season tag so could use a bow or firearm. I'm aware of the one public land hunt at Island Center, but am hoping to find somewhere to hunt prior to or after this public hunt.

I know there are areas and properties that deer are overpopulated, but does anyone know private land owners or any managed properties that I could get permission to hunt on?  I live close by and could contact or meet with them ahead of time?  I understand that many landowners are reluctant to let hunters access their property or see deer as pets,  but I would be happy to share venison or even some fish in exchange for land access and hunting privileges. If any one has information or contacts that you could share related to this, please PM me, I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks!

I had this tag several years ago.  Honestly, I think it is the most useless tag in the book.  WDFW gives out lots of tags (anybody can draw it), but look at the actual harvest statistics (hint: very low).

There is very little public, hunt able land there.  And the private landowners are almost uniformly not willing to let you hunt.

Consequently, the island is overrun with stunted deer.  I am very familiar with island deer throughout the Puget Sound, and the BT on Vashon are the worst.

It's nice you have a multi-season license although any hunter with a Modern license could hunt that tag in the same way.

Also, remember that Vashon is a firearm restricted area.

Good luck.

I drew an island tag a few years ago and just like you, I was looking for a backup spot.  Someone with more experience than I had suggested calling the fire department.  (a lot of firemen are pro-hunting, extremely friendly, and know the community) I was able to reach the chief who was willing to ask a few people he knew, and I wound up with written permission to hunt on private property that way.

That sounds like a great idea....thanks so much!

Good call on the fire department recommendation!

I wouldn't bother asking Kazan, though.  I've heard from a very reliable resource that he won't give anyone permission to hunt his property.

Another consideration is if the deer dies on the wrong property, you may have a real stressful night ahead of you

I filled a couple vashon tags years ago.  It’s a frustrating place to hunt.  Yes it can be done, but it’s a lot of stress for very little meat.

Yes, that is definitely a concern!  Curious how your hunt went....you must have found a place to hunt if you filled your tags.  Thanks for the info!
