Finally getting a chance to get the rest of this story wrapped up. I've been busy with work and still trying tyo get a blacktail when I'm not working. So here it goes..... bear with me, I'm not a writer.
I made 2 trips over to scout over the summer. 4th of July and Labor Day weekends. 4th of July was just learning roads for the most part. I put out some cameras and put a lot of miles on the truck. Labor Day weekend was nearly a waste of time. I took Friday off and after a 6hr drive was over in moose country by 10:30am. Things were going well until about 4pm. My stomach started turning and by 6pm I was way out in the middle of nowhere puking my brains out. I rented a motel on Saturday and slept most of the day.
Sunday I was feeling better and continued checking cameras. I had deer, Elk, bear and cougar but no moose yet. I noticed on Onx that there was a road that looked like it would be a shortcut to the last camera. It turned out to be too good to be true, after a mile down a bumpy crap road it ended with a closed gate. I had my Bakcou, so I decided to see if I could get through the 6-7 miles to grab that last camera and check out some area at the same time. The road was in great shape. It followed the south fork of Granite creek and Sema creek until eventually I came to another locked gate. Another 2 miles and I was able to grab My last camera. I didn’t have much hope for this camera as I found it lying next to the tree face up. Dam Bears!
I did get a few pictures of animals walking over the camera including a moose.
Now I have a plan. I have a camp spot right on the south fork of Granite creek and about 100 yards from the gate that blocks access for most people for 6 miles. It has a bunch of clearcuts on timber co land 2 miles in and another bunch of clearcuts 5 miles in. There’s also beaver ponds and meadows along the creek.
September 27th finally came. I left the house at 3am and 6-1/2 hours later I was setting up my new home away from home…. Moose camp!

My son met me there straight from a back country elk hunt in Montana. We got to work finishing setting up the wall tent and getting situated. He had till October 14th off and I didn’t have to be back to work until the 20th. Opening day was October 1st so we spent the next 3 days checking cameras and planning for day 1.

Opening morning we were at our spot before the sun came up. Errett stayed down low, so he could glass the cut I was working my way through. About an hour went by when I heard what I thought might be a bull grunting below me. Then I heard something big break some brush aways down the hill towards Errett. I kept moving side hill trying to get a look at what I figured was a bull when I got a text from Errett. He had been trying to get ahold of me for a while, and I finally walked into a little bit of cell coverage. The Text read, “HAUL ASS TO ME NOW! YOU CAN SHOOT BIG BULL FROM HERE.
I took off back to my bike and rode down the hill to where he was frantically waving me over. I got there and could hear the bull tearing up a tree but never did get to see him. We missed the chance at that bull but learned what they sound like and looked like. We gained some confidence also because up till that point we hadn’t seen a moose in the daylight.
We realized after the bull encounter that morning that we needed some radios. My son-in-law Derek was on his way over and we were able to get ahold of him before he drove past Spokane. He picked up 4 radios. On our way back to camp to meet up with Derek a bull ran out in front of us. We chased him a quarter mile and clocked him at 26 mph. This was on the Idaho side of the border. Opening day wasn’t bad at all.
More to come

Day 2 we hunted behind the gate on some of the clearcuts. Errett dropped me and Derek off at the Petite lake side of the 6 mile closed road and we hunted our way back to camp on bikes. It’s a great ride, the scenery along south granite creek and the Sema meadow area is beautiful in my opinion. We saw a fresh set of moose bull tracks along with some elk , deer and of course wolf tracks and scat all along the road..
