Sockeye Numbers
« on: June 30, 2025, 09:15:17 AM »
Sockeyes numbers way down from the projected, only 100k over Bonnie. 350k forecasted, damn shame, especially since we’ve been spoiled the last couple of years. I’m hearing the limit is going to be cut in half to 2 /fish a day after today’s meeting up at state. Let’s hope the run is just late but it’s not looking very good right now.

Spilt Milt on YouTube had a good video on it, didn't sound positive at all.  From his perspective, there was nothing to indicate the run was late.

I was just up at the Baker Lake dams last week and they're expecting a record 60k return of Sockeye with a 6 fish limit on Baker Lake.

Baker sox are an incredible success story. In the late 70s, they were down to runs of fewer than 100 fish.

pianoman9701- I was given a tour of the hatchery at the upper baker dam and it's pretty state of the art.  The main hatchery rears the fish through manual insemination, but they also have these gorgeous, fabricated gravel beds with a portion of the fish breeding naturally in pools of river water.

It's a great set up. In addition, the breeding areas of the lake are aerated. At one point, the water in the lake had little oxygen. So part of the recovery plan was putting in aeration pipes.

We’re heading for Entiat Thursday to give it a go. We’re not expecting too much. On another note the king run is doing great and their numbers are higher than last year but no keeping kings above Rock Island dam. Makes zero sense as usual.

Not sure if this has any validity to the low numbers but 4 years ago the okanogan water temp was 81* when the socks were sitting in the Brewster pool and a bunch of fish died. Heard a guy talking about it on a radio station🤷‍♂️

But I believe returning estimates are determined by smolt escapement correct? If so a die off of fish would have no bearing on this years return.

I wrote wdfw about the king season and got a garbage response with no information… I guess I shouldn’t be surprised with this BS state. There is 0 reason that they couldn’t have at least opened the season to 1 fish limit . The run isn’t that far off from a couple years ago with a 2 fish limit . Complete garbage from wdfw

Pretty sure it's the Commission making those decisions. They're very corrupted.

I’ve been following him for 2-3 years for ice fishing. Very informative and not one of those guys that just want’s to show off about the amount of fish he’s catching, he wants to share information.

Thanks for doing that. It’s super BS that there’s no season, no reasoning behind it. I’ve been watching the Rocky Reach live feed cam since late May and it’s been non stop kings swimming through. Makes me sick thinking they wouldn’t have a season up there. Numbers are healthy and higher than last year.

I was thinking they would do that after the 4 of July weekend. Bummer, but it does need to be limited for the dismissal numbers. The kings on the other hand.. what the hell?

I was out there this weekend.  The cooler night temperatures had them flushing up the Okanogan about a half mile to the bridge.  About mid-day, they would realize it was still too early to make their Canada run and flow back into the pool.  But it was like that Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The numbers are still low and it was tough sledding.  But if you're out there and can't find them Wednesday, tuck up the channel heading to the Okanogan bridge and you'll find them...and a lot of weeds.

We were at Brewster Friday, it sucked. Only had 2 bites and nothing showing on the livescope. Ended up going to Entiat the next day and at least had fish showing up on the screen and had a few bites but didn’t hook up. Right when we got there one of our poles hooked up with a king and broke our 30 pound test line right off the get go. We just couldn’t win this weekend. We’re going to give it a couple of weeks.

Brewster has been good for us. Limits everyday when it was 4 and quicker now that it’s 2.

The Chinook situation has me fired up. I listened to the meeting yesterday and they were pretty proud of the return. It’s higher than expected. On and on. It’s complete BS. They opened the lower end again because of how many fish are coming  through.  When someone asked about above Rocky Reach she said it wasn’t part of yesterday’s meeting and she would talk about it off of the public meeting to the guy that asked the question.

Earlier in the week they opened the Eniat River for 6 Chinook. They are worried about to many on the spawning beds. Those fish come and go into the Eniat constantly from the Columbia.

It does make you wonder if maybe the commission has some body’s that fish from Astoria to Rocky Reach and the hell with the rest of us.

I have talked to the Mexican restaurant in Brewster. He said his business has been devastated because of the lack of fisherman. Not to mention the hotels, stores and campgrounds.
