High buck hunt

Considering doing the high buck hunt with a buddy was wondering if it’s worth it or just better to wait till regular season?

Yep, go and have a new experience, best way to learn if it's worth it. Depending where, water can be one of your big challenges but no different than alpine hiking/climbing/camping is. Don't expect to be the only group out there.

I usually go, though realize success rates are really low (like 2%).  Buying a bear tag will def increase your odds of bringing home meat.

It’s a nice time to be in the mountains, it can be a lot of work for a very low success rate.

Treat it as a warm up hunt.  Generally a great time to be in the hills but typically a very low success rate and often more crowds then you would expect both hunters and non hunters.

Just like the others said, pretty low success, but the country is beautiful and worth every penny to be there. If you've never done this before, try a overnight trip and see if you like it. Leave early, very early in the morning, hunt the afternoon and then the next day to early afternoon. This will help in letting you know what you need to change, not change, as well as giving you an idea on what it will take to get a boned out deer and camp out.

Super fun totally worth it a true modern day adventure. Highlight of my son and I hunting every year incredible views no road hunters and usually lots of bear. Legal deer are there for sure but like everyone else has said very low success as far as meat goes but anytime in the high country is a success.

I love high buck! However in our experienced camp we are pretty low success rate, like others have said. For me a week long backpacking trip in the wilderness while hunting muleys... It's an adventure.

Weather can be 70 and hot or cold and snow. Usually you get both. So be prepared.

I think you gotta find a niche and work it. There’s a fella on here, I think he’s from my neck of the woods, who downs a buck almost every year in the high hunt. Can’t remember his user though.

I debated going on this hunt for over 20 years, at age 47 I decided to go for the first time. Wish I would have done it sooner! It all depends on your goal, if you have one week of vacation and want to kill something, the HB isn't for you. If you love being out in the wild and don't care if you bring home meat, you'll love the HB hunt.

Its a really nice time to be in the woods, so unless you are chasing elk at that time, might as well be out there.  It tends to be a nice camping trip.  You really never know what the weather is going to bring.   Keep your expectations low, and enjoy the time and the country.
