Classification initiative by WDFW
« on: September 19, 2025, 07:57:31 PM »
I don't know if I headlined that very well but here goes. At present the Department classifies vertebrates as game animals, furbearers, protected species and a large group that is unclassified.  In practice animals were classified when the Department wanted to manage them. There now is an ongoing effort to classify all these unclassified wildlife. I am told this is coming from the Diversity Division and they want to take some kind of active management role in all wildlife. Ok, skunks, opossums, nutria get made furbearers, but they are talking everything, moles, marmots, porcupine even mice. Now, are they going to set a season on mice, I doubt it, but it is a foot in the door towards spending money on all these miscellaneous wildlife. As if they don't already have enough to do. It seems to me, the bloating of government before our eyes. We always hear about how short of money they are and then we hear from the anti-hunters that we don't pay our way. At the same time, we will be paying for mountain beaver management.
Well, there it is a warning about what is coming and if you don't think this is possible the department already spends money on Bumblebees.
