Stuck live round
« on: September 28, 2025, 09:08:55 PM »
Thought I would ask the question before taking my rifle to the gunsmith if anyone had any tricks for getting a live round unstuck. Im not exactly sure how this happened but never the less I have a live round stuck in the chamber. The bolt is out and I’ve tried tapping with a rod down the muzzle with no luck and I don’t want to be too aggressive tapping on the bullet. Any tips appreciated

What kind of rifle or pistol?  I'm assuming an auto loader....AR style??  Very unlikely the round goes off if the bolt / fire pin is removed.  That said, there is always a chance....so proceed with caution.  I have used an old cleaning rod (without jag installed) so the road will center on the tip of the bullet.  I then strike it with a dead blow hammer.  You have to hit it pretty hard.

If you have a threaded barrel, I have seen some folks fashion an air chuck to the barrel and push the round out with air.  Some will fashion a grease zerk to push grease down the barrel to pressurize and push the bullet out.

Maybe a little wd40 down the barrel before whacking it with a rod.  Keep your head clear and muzzle pointed in the right direction.

Bolt action Mauser 98 30.06

Brand new barrel just put on by gunsmith and I probably shouldn’t have used a re loaded round cause it’s a new chamber. Not my best moment🤦🏻‍♂️

Sort of on the same lines as already mentioned, but pack some grease down the barrel. Get a stout rod and a cleaning patch or few. Stuff some cleaning patches down the barrel. Put a patch on the rod and hit it with a hammer. Removed a lot of bearings this way. Should work for a round and wont be a real solid blow on it.

Use plenty of grease and have snuggles fit around the rod as it goes down the barrel. It creates a lot of hydraulic force.

Spray some Kroil from both ends and let it sit for a bit. Tap the chamber on the outside and the bullet end. Re apply if necessary but be patient and keep tapping.

I had similar trouble with reloads. The bullet would lodge in the chamber (30-06) and the casing/powder/primer would pull out when bolt opened. The reloads had a slightly larger diameter copper neck I believe. Or the round expanded? Either way I went to factory rounds and never had the problem again. But yeah used cleaning rod and a little hammer to tap round out. Mine weren’t hot.

gunsmith will just tap it out with a rod.  just get it center so the rod only impacts the bullet and not the barrel interior. a wood dowel from Lowes would probably be best and easy to find.,

Thanks for the suggestions. I took it to the gunsmith and he got it out with no damage which I guarantee I would have messed something up. lol. I watched a few YouTube videos and guys had pushed the bullet into the case and had to remove the barrel to get the case out. I do like the grease method that HNTNFSH suggested but my gunsmith did not. Lol

So I picked up my rifle this morning and he has a caliber specific knockout rod that he used with the 2 pound sledge! He said he had to whale on it to get the case knocked out but he was able to do it without damaging anything so thank goodness. The bullet is now a flat nose that is shoved down into the neck of the case.lol.
