East Side Quail Numbers?
« on: November 03, 2025, 06:31:07 PM »
I spent some time in the Columbia Gorge this past weekend for birds. I was very surprised how few quail we booted; very few.  Is that the trend this year, or I just was in the wrong spot?
It was odd to jump more mule deer than quail.

Highly likely you were just in marginal habitat or an area that has easy access and gets pounded.

I only bird hunt now.  I don't know about South Central Wa but in Eastern Wa the last 5 years the quail numbers are huge, but they all live on the edge of town or the suburbs.  When actually hunting you will hit coveys but I think they get hammered on public land

I have hunted Grant County 5 days so far this season and I bet I have flushed 500 - 600 quail. Mostly large coveys. The most I have seen since 2018 or so.

I have about 100 that come through my place every day. Our whole canyon is loaded with them

Sounds like I need to get out of the Columbia and hit new grounds. Thanks everyone!
