Serious question please save the hate if you got it, I am not judging anyone.....What is the draw for just general out of state hunting in places like Idaho every year?   It seems sooo expensive for tags.  For Idaho it seems like it was around $600 +/- for deer and $900 +/- for elk.   I'm not hating on anyone for doing it, but I can't justify that much $ when those animals are also walking around WA for less than half that $ and not nearly the gas or lodging etc $$.  Is it better odds, chances, quality etc and if it is, is that for every tag or are there special draw tags?  I am gonna do it at some point in Montana as my son will be at U of M in a few years, but that will be more about spending time with him than anything else. Is it that?  Is it the hunting with friends and the trip?

Good luck to all the folks that did draw tags.

Thanks

Everyone has a different reason for hunting out of state, but it generally boils down to being able to hunt more.  :dunno:

Exactly this. It gives people more opportunities to hunt and make memories. If I had the money and the time off I would apply for every state just to experience new hunts and new adventures. Never know when it’ll be your last hunt.

For me personally it's about opportunity to hunt an area with a decent success rate for my target animal (bull elk). I've hunted eastern Washington elk multiple times over the years, but chasing spikes has a dismal success rate. Now that archery cow tags are draw only, the opportunity is even less. Sure, it's not cheap, but most peoples hobbies cost some money. If you're successful, it's hundreds (or more) of dollars worth of meat. Most people's hobbies don't have a potential offset like that!

 :yeah:

An extra deer tag, long season and solid deer population has always been my reason. That said I passed on entering the draw this year to see how it went for everyone else.

So I've heard some draw odds where like 1 percent...
Pretty crazy
I think some blame can be attributed to Montana announcing a reduction in tags.
Lots of first time Idaho guys from what I can tell...

And I bet lots of returned tags this year.

I’m curious to see draw numbers. Lots of guys I’ve talked to applied for units that had leftovers last year after the first sale and none of them drew this year. Wasn’t expecting so many non draws

I see quite a few people on this site that have never hunted Idaho that put in for this draw this year. I only know one person who drew a deer tag. Blows me away. I think more people put in than one would think

We are almost now all the way pay to play in all states and every state will see the demand and up prices…10 years ago was amazing and in 2036 we will be saying the same about this year it’s all a money game and I can understand that yes it sucks but it’s all our passions

Nephew and I were first time applicants and drew for our 1st choice for deer. I never wanted to play the “log on at midnight and watch the system crash over and over game” so I never tired for ID.. but with this new draw system it seemed a little more manageable so we applied and got lucky. Super stoked to be exploring some new country this fall. I’ve hunted Montana the last 5-6 years and I’m thinking that’s not gonna be happening any longer since they are changing the non-res opportunities..
