I hope they don’t let first time applicants into the second draw but I didn’t see where it addressed that in the FAQ’s about the draw.

Did anyone actually get drawn with choices 3-5? Or were all the tags gone after round 2?

And I agree that you shouldn’t be applying for tags you’re not serious about hunting. You not only run the risk of disqualifying yourself for the second draw but you also likely took the tag from someone who knows the area and typically hunts it regularly.  :twocents:

Same, if you didn’t apply for round 1, you certainly should not be able to apply in round 2.

I disagree with you on your last paragraph. I get where your coming from but the main reason i put in for deer is if i didn't draw an elk tag, a guy might be able to draw a deer tag. Kind of a back up plan, which i know a few other folks that looked at it the same way. I will be hunting a new area I never been to and i don't feel one bit bad taken it from others that may know the area better. I've hunted the majority of the last 15 years in one spot in Idaho but figured draw odds would be tough so i chose a unit with likely better odds and it paid off.

I'm pretty surprised how many deer tags are left available for the 2nd draw in the units that I put in for.  That is quite a few tags drawn but not purchased in the 1st draw.   My first choice in the first draw was a tag that would be more desirable, and I'm surprised there  are that many tags not purchase.   But, even with people that drew in the 1st draw not being able to apply again, we are still looking at probably 40K people applying for the 1909 deer tags.....I already spent the license money, so might as well do the 2nd draw (and the controlled draw later).

I called the idfg before I bought my tags to find out what all my options were of I didn't buy because I drew 2nd choice. You won't be able to do the 2nd draw. Anyone that drew in the 1st round is out of the 2nd draw whether you purchased or not.

Make folks front tag fees, no refunds (except tag fees for those not drawn), and stop this silliness of multiple draws.

Making all applicants front the tag fees for what used to be an OTC tag would drastically reduce applicants and cost Idaho millions in non-resident license fees.  I don't see Idaho giving up that revenue now.

Perhaps just auto charge the tag to people that drew (ie no chance to return it).  And limit choices to just one unit choice per species.  People would have to be more strategic in how they apply.

I don’t see your point of view as disagreeing with what I said. It sounds like you are serious about hunting the tags you applied for but if you drew multiple you may choose to only buy one.

I am pretty sure that a majority of the 1900 deer tags and 1100 elk tags not purchased were not because people drew both and chose to only hunt one. There is probably many reasons but if the reason was you drew a tag that you decided wasn’t the one you wanted or you don’t have enough money… those are the ones I’m saying should not have applied for those tags.

I wonder how many applied for both deer and elk in the same area, only drew 1 or the other and decided not to pick up the 1 tag if they couldn’t hunt both?

Also I don’t understand the sentiment that sitting out the 1st draw should disqualify you from the 2nd draw? Odds were drastically better in the 1st draw I would imagine and the number who will jump into the 2nd draw is likely minuscule

Where did you find this?  Curious why there are 2 sets of numbers.

Looks like top set is how many available and bottom set shows how many actually applied. If I’m understanding that correctly

Applications versus applicants... Group apps causing the difference.

So in all reality the odds of drawing were not that bad compared to other state draws.

There were enough tags for 47% of the applicants that applied.

Nice work, @Antlershed

Now that we know how many applicants there were in each category, have we seen a similar graphic for the number of unique tags in each of those categories?  This seems obvious, but I don't know it.
