turkey hunting question series - 5
« on: February 04, 2026, 08:37:03 AM »
setting up on a bird - your decision process... not talking blind in edge of field, that is kind of self explanatory. this one is for the run and gun guys... all the things that you use to decide what acorn to sit on....

I want a roll, a bend in a road, or something that when he gets to where I can see him, he is within 40 yards and I can shoot.  I also prefer higher ground if I can have it and it makes sense.  Good back cover and possibly some front cover as well if there is some or if I can drag some to my sit.

well not much interest in this question!  for those who work birds rather than sit in a blind, setup is really key to success. knowing your effective range on shotgun (40 yds is my go too) is my starting point. Yes, located uphill or high ground gives you some advantage, on a rise where 40yds is the edge of your sight line. my setup is to first see the bird at that 40 yd point, same for a dirt road/game trail corner, effectively bird is dead when you first make contact with it and you can let it slip in until you have had the show or it gets nervous and you dont dare wait longer. ground cover trying not to outline body, shaded hiding spot, sun to back is important too, i even put some front brush if i have time to mask movement. i bring brush trimmers to help with this. one final thought, i absolutely carry a thick foam cushion to sit on and be comfortable for this adventure. some of the vests really come with cheap seats!
