MA10 Blackmouth anyone?
« on: April 02, 2026, 05:44:12 PM »
Anybody get lucky in 10 with the 4 day blackmouth season? We got 2 small ones today. 24” and a 28”. Seemed pretty slow overall but did see a few getting caught.

Work is keeping me away. Bummer. Where is this info that it is only a four day season? Doesn't it start again next Wednesday?

Sorry. Just went and looked. I misread the regs. It’s open Wed-Sunday through the end of April. Don’t have any experience with this fishery. We were with Cut Plug Charters. Will they close it at all if they decide too many fish caught?

It’s closed more than it’s open between that and area nine that’s why I sold my boat

Yes, it won't last the full month, they will shut it down once the quota is met.  Fishing and weather were great last year and it lasted four days.  Maybe get a little longer this year.

I've been out the last three mornings and got my fish.  Yesterday's was a nicer one, 29" and a little over 9 lbs.

I wasn't aware this early fishery was quota based. Anyone have that number?

It's "encounter" based, here's the link.

https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/reports/creel/seasonal#ps-winter-chinook

Looks like 4491 total encounters, 967 unmarked encounters, and 3713 sublegal encounters.

I'm waiting for Area 9 to open.  I think I'll have a long wait.

We landed 5, I think, sub legal fish.

The WDFW research North River boat was fishing next to us for a good portion of yesterday as well. They caught 2 fish that I saw.

How do they know about sublegal encounters?

Creel check's, combine with the DFW test fishing boat results.
If every boat fishing admits to a fish checker they released 3 subs. The DFW boats release 5 subs. They'll average it out , count boats, add that average to each boat and bam....the season is over.
