Ticks and turkey hunting
« on: April 18, 2026, 07:59:10 AM »
Being that it’s been really cold for the first few days of the opener, ticks haven’t been out much, at least I have seen any, but as the weather turns those blood suckers will start showing up.  How do you all prep for sitting in their prime habitat for hours on end, in one spot waiting on that tom?  I know permethrin, tucking in pants, etc all will definitely help, but dang if every time I feel an itch, I’m thinking a tick made it past my defenses.  My biggest ingress route is probably around my neck and facial area so I put down repellent there as well.

Maybe I’m being overly paranoid, but I really don’t want to get lyme disease or god forbid the one that makes you allergic to red meat  :yike:

The spring in the northeast was very early this year, in my opinion spring is about 3 weeks ahead of normal. I found two ticks on myself before season opened, just from putting in food plots. As soon as it warms up again they will be active again. We've mowed our lawn twice before season opened, normally its about a week into season before we mow the first time. Toms are already running around without hens and we are seeing lots of lone hens that have nests hidden. There's leaves coming on the brush, that normally doesn't happen until sometime the first week of May. Weather forecast says 80 degrees next Tuesday, I cant remember ever seeing 80 in the Colville area in April.

Wrap double sided tape around your legs above your knees... Another around your chest and arms and collar if your beating the brush and touching trees and such for added protection...
I love you... I really do...

This might sound dumb, but on the outside or inside of your clothes?

Since we started using permethrin several years ago, we've had very few on us. We follow instructions and douse everything we wear, including vests and pads. Just got back from 3.5 days of hunting and brush besting, not a single tick.
