Pack Goats
« on: Today at 07:52:20 AM »
I recently picked up these cute bull headed monsters. Pure Ober Buckling, and Alpine / Ober cross buckling. My plan is to raise them for packing. Anyone else on here pack goats on their hunts?

I don't see a lot of resources for training and I would love input. I think leaning into their nature and handling the hell out of them is the easy solution when lacking clear resources. Lots of trail / lead / empty pack time.

I've raised goats on and off for 20 years. These are bottle boys and are already following us everywhere. We live on Fir Island so I have miles of dike trails to train following and lead. We're over handling feet, conditioning to a good dog, and lots of chaotic babies.

Any info would be appreciated.

I have 3 goats that are 10 months old that I am training to hopefully pack. They 100% alpine whethers and they are about 70 lbs now, hoping they top out around 175 lbs. My training so far has been spending as much time with them as I can and getting them used to being with me. A couple weeks ago I started working with them on leads and its been slow but they are making progress. Here soon I plan to get them out in the hills with me on some short hikes. I have also built them some obstacles in their pen for them to jump and play on to help improve their coordination. It is pretty amazing how you can bring anything in their pen or bring them close to anything they can stand on and up they go.

Are your goats bottle fed or mama? Were they from a random breeder or actual packing lines?
