onx failure
« on: May 18, 2026, 08:32:36 PM »
Anyone else get a failure on onx late last week (Thursday-Friday)? My app completely stopped opening while I was a few miles into the mountains out of cell service backpacking. I got an update from customer service that said there was a bug and it was fixed but it was quite the bummer to lose my map, along with my tracks and way-points I added. Usually I go by the standard if gear fails once, it's gonna fail again so I'm sorta struggling with what to do. Do I carry a back-up map? I'm not as worried about getting lost but it's pretty nice to be able to look at the contour lines and such.

This is why I have both OnX & BaseMap. It’s not uncommon that one or the other won’t work when I’m out of cell range. Gohunt has one now, too, but I haven’t tried that one

I don't have OnX... I used to until I went back to old school... I just pin stuff with my Google maps if I feel the need... My dad has OnX... Go Hunt was kinda lame IMO... Had a free trial for a year buying game cams... Compared to my dad's OnX... Garbage in central and western WA... The interaction is not ideal like OnX... I think it's more for farmland hunters...

Few things are more frustrating then using an electronic map system and having it go down. It for sure will be at the wrong time.
I had a Metzger with me the last time and while I had to work out where I was EXACTLY on the paper map I am certain it made the difference between running low on gas and maybe stuck in the hills with no phone and getting back to civilization safely.
The electronic maps are great. Until they are not. Backup system is good to have.

I didn't have an issue but both of my boys, that use apple Iphones did, and they had to delete and reinstall the app once we had signal again to get things working.  My android worked fine during that time thankfully as we were kinda out there a ways and on new ground.

As a rule, I'm kind of an anti-tech guy.  Nothing irritates me more at work than getting some new tech shoved on me that I have to spend a year learning, then it's obsolete in 2 years... :bash:
But I am surprised at how much I've come to rely on OnX.  Last fall, when I killed my buck, my phone died after I took two pictures and I had to navigate back to my truck, a few miles in the dark, "old school".  10 years ago I'd have set a course, and if I ended up on the road within  1/4 mile of where I had parked and gotten my bearing, I would have considered that pretty good.  Instead, I felt like I was blindly stumbling through the mountains in "generally" the right direction, and was frustrated that I didn't come out right where I parked.  Weird, how expectations shape your experience...

BTW, I noticed the same thing last week too. I had to reinstall it (I thought maybe my subscription had run out and needed to be renewed...)

Always have a backup map if you're using electronic navigation and make sure you familiarize yourself on it with the area you're hunting.

What I didnt realize is how off the lines can actually be. I'm looking at homes on land in N. Central WA and the property lines on OnX have been off by almost 50' on some of the pieces. I looked into it and they said that is normal. Makes you think twice about hunting property boundaries.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

I often find the same and have started using Onx as a guide and then looking for physical property boundary markers to try and make sure I stay off private.

You can recalibrate your gps to see if that helps pick up accuracy... It's all about how many satellites you're connected to at the time... I think it's up to 5... And the quality of the gps system in your phone... My dad's is usually accurate withing a few feet since he got a new iPhone 17... Except for some places in the Paysayten last year... But I always carry a paper map for myself...

I only lost the tracks and waypoints I had made from Wednesday morning to Thursday evening when it went down so not too bad.

Mine went down too! I thought it was just me until I saw this post. For me it was Wednesday or thursday. I was fishing Okanogan with no service, and I wanted to explore one area where I had not downloaded an offline map. Halfway up a mountain, I suddenly got two bars so opened onX and downloaded the offline map. But when I went back to it, onX wouldn't open. The screen just went red and then the app closed. Back in civilization days later, I deleted the app and reinstalled just like others posted above, and it worked fine. I even still have the last waypoints and that final offline map. But it was unpleasant, and it would have made me livid had I been hunting.
For me the worst thing was that I tried to communicate my problem to onX, and the first time I typed my message (basically the above) it sent back an AI response that was not relevant. So I said I wanted a human response, and it made me type the whole message again, and then it deleted it right before I could send it.
But I will give onX a pass this first time. It has been almost flawless except for this.

Ive had onX fail on me a couple years ago during an elk hunt. Luckily i knew where i was and how to get back. I was able to find service and delete the app and re-download it and it worked. But if i was deep somewhere i would of had a much harder time getting out safe. I havent touched a compass since the Marines but im getting one and going to use it more in combination with a physical map atleast in the truck. I was always pretty good at land nav but its been a few years.
