What brand/ type of calls do you use for ducks & geese???
« on: July 08, 2009, 05:14:18 PM »
I just wanted to see what calls everyone likes to use.  Do you have any calls that you would hands down recommend?

i havent tried enough, or hunted around enough different types to have a hands down favorite. my buddy has an echo BOSS that sounds pretty good to me(i think the boss is meant to be a comp call though). i have had some lower end Buck Gardners and some Duck Commanders.

Some people have their favorite brands, until i find my favorite i guess i dont have a standby call

For ducks I like my old Olt Sonderman 66 and a Tim Grounds Finnisher, been using a Duck Comander Brown Sugar and it works well.  For geese an Olt 50 Flute and an Olt 77.  Old-F--t equipment but they still work.

My favorite happens to be the cheapest that I carry,  a Duck Commander "Ole Raspy".  I also use a foiles "straight meat mallard' that sounds great and a foiles goose call.  Of course on my lanyard there are 6 calls,  but those are my fav's.

For geese I use a combination of Zink SR-1's, a Zink lm-1, and a Foiles SMH- which I probably use the most. I couldn't begin to name all the duck calls that I have used! Oddly- I tend to use an old Duck Commander dc-200 as my go to call. I mostly hunt smallish puddles and marshes and that call is flat out deadly. It is sad- but all the high end calls end up getting sold or traded in favor of the $9.99 DC.

I have sold most of my expensive calls.  As some of the duck commander ones get great response from the birds.  You will get them mallards that will turn their head to look over there back almost and cut hard and come in.  That's probably some of the funest is getting the response from the birds as you talk them in.  I have amassed quite the collection of calls.  Last count I was over a 160 calls.

Been collecting calls for over 28 years.  Bought and sold some good ones over the years.  I wish I had pictures of some of the ones I have sold.

If you don't mind spending a little money i suggest getting a zink call. They are very easy to use they sound great and the birds respond very well to them.

How much is "a little money"?  What does a zink call average?

How much is "a little money"?  What does a zink call average?
A cheap Zink duck call "Power Hen" in the Poly material will run about $25 dollars.  Then the calls go up from there to the Money Makers which run about $150.  I would go to a sports shop and try a few.  Some of the Zinks take a higher volume of air and if you don't practice a lot you can be winded and cut your notes short scaring the birds.  I have several Zink calls and found that I liked the Tim Grounds Triple Crown goose call.  I also use a RNT duck call.  A cheap duck call that is over looked is the Primos Original Wench call.  The birds respond well to it, but I tune it frequently.  Also check out the Duck Commander ones.  They may not sound like some of the calling tapes but the birds respond to them well.  That's the ticket, your not trying to do a calling competition, just good response from the birds.

Good info, thanks. Only three years of duck hunting under my belt. Sorry I waited so long...
