Wyoming Region H Mule deer
« on: July 21, 2009, 06:53:32 PM »
Hey all,

I drew this tag this year and have been on the phone with previous hunters(HF), Rangers, and drop camp services.  Thought I would ask my Hunt-WA brother and sisters if they had any experience with the Sept. High Country hunt.  Any info would be greatly appreciated!  My best friend lives in Gillette and will be my sponsor to hunt the wilderness areas.  We have a few areas narrowed down with cross-referencing, but you can never get too much info.  Thanks in advance and I would be more that happy to trade info via PM.

I can't help with a sept. high hunt, but could point you in a good drainage that I have hunted in the past.

Hunted H in 2001. Went down by myself in my Geo Metro. Got started on this trip about two days late because of the World Trade Center attacks. I just couldn't pull myself away from the TV.

Anyway, I packed in about 3 miles and hunted another 2 from there. Opening morning, first light, I had a great buck with some non-typical points standing on the edge of the trees in the back of a group of 7 bucks. He was facing straight away at 160 yds, and I was just waiting for him to turn a little and show me some shoulder so that I could put him down. 30 secs. later, I here a shot from a mile away (not shooting at my buck), and these deer decided it was time to leave, and just like that, they are in the trees and gone. In hind sight, if I'd known what was going to happen, I'd have tried to shoot him in the neck or something. Would never intentionally shoot an unwounded buck in the ass, but this sure made me question my own ethics!

Later that day, I ended up shooting a 24" 4x4 with great back forks. Boned him out and packed the entire deer out to car and ice chest in one trip, and packed up and headed home the next day.

Beautiful country, great views, and hard work! Was hating that buck the whole time I was packing him out, questioning my own sanity, but it was all worth it in the end.

Sounds like a great trip CB....too bad on the NT!   I saw that you attached some pics, but I can't see them at work for some reason?  Hopefully, they work at home!  Thanks for the response.....I keep hearing the same story in speaking with previous hunters.  You guys are getting me more and more excited.  Always fun to hunt where BIG deer live.

Sent you a PM.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I drew a region H tag in 02'. My buddy owns a cabin near merna jct bordering forest land. We hunted fairly close to his cabin, 1\2 hour drives, then hunt away from the rig on short hunts, then back to the cabin every night for dinner and a good nights sleep. The day I got my buck we hunted right out of the cabin. I cut tracks a 1\4 mile from the cabin, tracked them 3\4 mile til I finally caught up with him. The fresh snow helped a bit, lol. Anyway I'll post a pic. 27" 4x4 151 bc
