Shock Collar

My golden retriever keeps running away when we let him out.  I was hoping to borrow a shock collar from someone to train him to stay in the yard.  Anyone have one?  Or any ideas?  I don't want to buy one, and I don't think it will take long to train him.

If he runs from you, has this tendency, he is escaping you. Put a collar on this type of dog and just start zapping him he may just bolt and run further and farther than he ever has. Collar isn't the cure and not fair to the dog. Work him on long check cord and do obedience for about 3 straight weeks every day for about 15 minutes. If you do it religously, I'll bet you and the dog will be about 10X happier with each other...Just my thought..Happy.

May I make a suggestion, you need to work with a check cord and pinch collar long before you try the shock collar.  You can do more harm then good with the shock collar.  Get yourself a 30 or 40 foot check cord and pinch collar.  First things first he needs to be leading properly on a 6 foot lead.  Once you have the basics down, sit, stay, come, then move to the check cord and work him in a fenced yard.  Once your out to the end of the check cord and he is listening and knows what your asking then you can go to the shock collar.  But don't put the shock collar on and start working.  Otherwise you'll create a dog that only listens and only obeys when he is wearing the collar.  I like to get the dummy collars and have them wear it for a week while I'm doing the check cord work.  Then put the real collar on and use the LOWEST setting possible.  Keep working in the confined area.  Promise your self no matter what your not going to loose your temper, especially  when he's wearing the shock collar.  You have to build a good foundation and he has to know what you are asking long before you put the shock collar on.

I think a training collar can work, but "borrowing" one and then trusting your dog will obey you w/o it are some high expectations. I raise Labs, and they are pretty smart dogs. A training collar just to fix the problem will not work in MHO. Buying one and having it on hand is much better than borrowing and hoping it does the trick the short time you have it.

Thanks for the replies fellas.  The doesn't run from me.  He loves me and comes to me every time I call.  But sometimes when we let him out of the house he just takes off running and doesn't look back.  We walk him and try to give him plenty of exercise.  He obeys well when it comes to commands to sit, lay down, come, etc.  But I am going to try and find a long rope/cord to train with.  He is a smart dog, but he just sometimes get that urge to get out and run.  My other golden doesn't have that problem...but then again, we raised him from a puppy.  We got "the runner" at about age 1 1/2 from a shelter.

that is good. A long check cord and a pair of gloves on when you are teaching is a must...had a nasty burn on my palm from a long lead a few years ago....it hurts! Be sure to let him really hit the end of the rope. Give a little bit of a shock action with your arms so he doesn't get injured but, you want it to hurt a little to teach the lesson. It is important. The consequences could be losing your buddy to a car passing by when he doesn't listen. You won't hurt him and he will learn fast. Command NO! HERE! as soon as he hits the end of the rope and reel him back in. The first few times I would let him go for it without warning. After a couple lessons as you are walking out the door command no, here, heal...it shouldn't take long. I use "OK" for my dogs when its time for them to cut loose...PG

I would try everything else and the shock collar last.  Goldens are very eager to please.... work on establishing his boundries on your property.  A E-collar is rarely ever needed on a golden and there's a higher likelyhood of causing more problems than your solving.  I'm on my 4th golden and never used a collar on any.  Pointer, setters and springers... they have there place.

I hate the term shock collar.   They are training collars, and you should only give your dog enough stimulation to re-inforce the training you have already done.
