Inexperienced in call'in bear so far.  Called a bobcat in when calling rabbits when I was 17.  My only experience with an "electronic" call would be an old Johnny Stewart varmit call on a 45 rpm record & about 100' of wire back to the truck battery.  Only thing I called in was a horned owl.  Couldn't hear him but saw a shadow move in the moonlight & looked up.  He was hovering about 4' above my head w/about a 4' wingspan.  About filled my pants!  :o

I would have to say yes, that a side arm would be uselessthey are really useless if ya dont have one

thats a big cat...I never noticed how white their chins were until last year, watching that cougar stalk me and my brother at night through the scope..
