Wire / rope spools
« on: August 18, 2009, 09:00:23 PM »
Ok, just a quick question?  Those that have and use cable or rope spools to get there elk out whole what size and how much/long do you carry?  The group of guys that I hunt elk with all have pack boards, but we see a lot of hunters with cable spools in the back of their trucks.  We always wonder if it is easier to pull them out whole or bring them out in 5 pieces.  The 1 issue is with the cable you would have to be relatively close to a logging road but we see cable spools with at least 1000 yards of cable.  So what's the scoop and does it work?

I use the 5/8" crab rope as well, me and my hunting buddy bought it from a marine shop in Westport. If I remember right it was about $120 for 500 yds. We welded a nice steel frame to hold the spool and added a crank and it works like a charm.
If you dont like guns...DONT BUY ONE!!

You could get one of those chainsaw winch's.  Then you dont need a such a long piece of rope.

I use muletape, and have lengths from 200' to 2500'  Rated at 1800bs, and as long as u keep it off rocks or pinchpoints, it will pull any elk out.  Having blocks with this rigging is a must.

We have the saw winch. We use a chunch of rope about 100' and have pulled them up to a road from 1/4 mile out. much safer than the long hay wire systems or stretchy long ropes.
