Bluegill at Fazon Lake

Went fishing with a buddy yesterday and finally got some worth keeping! We were catching so many fish I barely had time to drink a beer!

They're pretty tasty BBQ'd!

How big was the biggest one?  I love bass fishing in that lake. Was the algae still blooming?

The biggest was about 7". There was still a lot of algae, not sure if it was blooming though.

What do you usually use for bass? The bluegill were biting like crazy with just plain worms.

For a while it was so bad that you couldnt see your lure an inch under the surface, is it still like that? 
Lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, and scum frogs are good when the algae is strong.  When it clears up texas rigs or jig n pigs work well.

Redstar, arent those sunfish? Our bluegill dont have that red dot on the gill plate....and a bit different coloration...?  :dunno: Here is a pic of the bluegill my kids have been catching...

I always thought the ones with the red dot were called pumpkin seeds

Yes, the water is still very murky. You can hardly see your lure. Thanks for the lure tips for bass.

To be honest, I haven't fished for anything except trout in a few years. I'm probably a little rusty on my fish ID...

I guess they could be pumpkinseed's?! Now I'm curious... What about the different colorations in the second picture? I thought that was from male/female - 2 males in the second pic?

Yeah, I thought that sunfish and pumkinseeds were synonymous.  :dunno:

Anyway, regarding the bluegill in my pic above, the ones with an orange belly were ripe with eggs... less spiny and no transulscent blue on the gill plates... Sometimes we catch both....as seen in this pic, the punkinseeds really stand out from the bluegill (only one in the pic at bottom left...)....a punkinseeds mouth also seems a bit smaller, and way more spiny of a fish... (little *censored*s...)

I think the first picture of the 7 headless fish is 5 sunfish and two bluegill.   They both taste great!

You know it!  I have been filleting panfish for 30+ years....  Now, when my kids catch them...if the smaller ones which we would toss back are foul hooked, we bucket them. So I spend all the next morning filleting for hours. Nothing wasted here!  I even get fillets off tiny little ones....
