Hornady 54. cal 240 GR HP/XTP
« on: August 28, 2009, 01:36:37 AM »
Ok guys, today i bought some 54. cal sabots from hornady. They are 240 GR HP/XTP. I was wondering if you guys think a 240 gr bullet will work good on elk? Remember it's a jacketed bullet. The guy at sportsmans/ wholesale said oh yea that bullet will work awsome! What do you guys think? Thanks

That is a good bullet.  I shoot them in my .44mag.  But for  Elk with a ML I want at least 300g.  Hornady makes a .44 cal 300g XTP.  I've also found that the longer bullets can take more velocity before they go unstable.

I'm thinking you might want to look up the cal. limit for elk. Not sure if it changed as well this year but it has been 45. cal. and larger in the past.

I would also look for a heavyer bullet. If you want to shoot something that small you might as well get a 50. cal or even a 45. cal. :dunno:
