Rem 870 problem
« on: September 03, 2009, 10:19:24 AM »
I just got a new Remington 870 Express and ran one box of trap loads through it.  Every other round or so is hard to eject, I really have to crank on the slide to eject some of them.  Anyone else have this problem?  Is this just a break in issue or do I have a lemon?

Did you clean the barrel and chamber before you shot it? They put some sort of grease in there you need to get out. If that doesn't work, the chamber may need some very light polishing with jb's bore paste or 000 steel wool around your swab.

I gave it a good cleaning before I shot it.  I’ll try polishing the chamber and give it another try.

I don't know if this would help or even a good thing, but I spent a couple nights at home in the chair running the slide back and forth to break in my 870 express.  Worked great and and is super smooth now.

Which model is it?

When i got my super mag for duck hunting, i had a simialar problem. When i was running 2 3/4 through it they would snag up at times. It eventually was better after a lil bit  :dunno:

That is also a great way to see your daughter and her boyfriend off on a date...

The only issue I ever had with shell ejections was with some handloads someone gave me.  For some reason this one set was dang near impossible to eject.

might try switching ammo for a few boxes until the action is broken in.

I like that advice.  That should make sure that they get home on time.  :chuckle:

This is a very common problem with the new expresses shooting the cheap low wall brass trap shells. The finish in the chambers are not as polished as they use to be. The brass when shot, heats up and expands a bit and grabs onto the rough chamber wall, not allowing to rack.

the reason  why SPS and Wingmasters cost more, and are worth it.
Keep running ammo thru it, polish the chamber. it will get better

Polish the chamber, working the action all day won't do much but give you a sore wrist.  Yes that was supposed to be funny.  Seriously just polish the chamber.  Express is a inexpensive gun and built accordingly.  Perfectly good quality overall, but you have to give a little when you save a lot.

Beat the hell outta my express for 15 years, and it still works perfect!  Back of the truck gun!

best way to smooth out an 870 is just to use it i think.

the first half dozen shells i put through my wingmaster were hard to eject, but by the time i had run a box through it, the gun was slicker than snot.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I do not recommend steel wool, maybe the finest crocus cloth you can find would be more suitable.  The JB paste on your patches, and just spin it in the chamber, but make sure you get it all out when cleaning afterwards.

By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.
