Last weekends Tuna Trip
« on: September 03, 2009, 09:22:52 PM »
Well we didnt get the numbers that we got last year, but it was still a good time. Last year in one full day of fishing we caught 137 tuna for 11 guys. This year was a 1 1/2 day trip ( at least thats what we paid for ) and we only ended up with 74 fish for 12 guys. I deffinetly had bragging rights though because I caught 19 of the 74. :chuckle:

It was suposed to be a 1 1/2 day trip. When we called a couple days prior they told us to be at the pier around 9-10pm, and the boat would head out around 2am. This way we would be on the Tuna grounds at light. When we got to the pier the boat had just got back from a day trip, and when we asked the captain what time we where heading out he said not till 6-7am. He told us that the bait dock didnt open till 5am and that we couldnt get ice till 6am. We slept on the boat and when morning rolled around we had starter issues with the boat. :bash: After that was resolved we got bait and ice and headed out. By that time it was getting close to 9am. So by the time we got out to the grounds it was around noon. Kinda a bunch of BS. Probably gonna go with a diffenent outfit next year. Really only got a days worth of fishing for the price of a two day trip. Oh well.

Very nice, I want to run sometime for sure.  Got a guy that keeps telling me, "yea we'll hit it" but still haven't got that call when he is ready to run....  Looks like a blast...  What was the 1 1/2 day cost for the trip- per person?  Heck might end up going charter if this guy doesn't come through..

Price is around 475$-525$ depending on which charter you take. That price is for the 1 1/2 day. This trip normally leaves at night and gets you to the tuna grounds at light. You fish one full day. Then fish Humbolt squid for a while that night. Get a little shut eye then fish a half day before heading back. Plan on a additional 75$-100$ for deckhand tips because thats all they get paid. Also if you want your fish fileted its approx 3$ a fish. Trips can get cut short due to weather with not much of a refund so its best to book around the end of July and into August. This also is good because the warm water is normally not to far. I bring my own tuna rods and hooks. Owner makes a killer size 2 live bait hook with a welded ring on the eye of the hook. Works kinda like a circle hook. You get alot more solid hook ups. Also bring surgical tubing and pencil lead. Helps get your anchovie down a little faster. Somtimes the anchovies dont want to swim down to get eaten. This gives them a little motivation. :chuckle:

I know a guy who does trips out of westport 2 nights 3 day (2 full days fishing) for $550 this year they averaged 25 fish per guy with 10 guys on board. I'll have to get his number when I get back.

My trip was cancelled last year a day before, due to weather.  Ended up not going.

those are some great looking fish! I need to take a shorter salmon run to see how my stomach would do past the bar. I never get sick anywhere else, but I do have a bad history with long car trips... I'd love to get out there and chase tuna though. those are GREAT looking fish. good color too!
