Eastern Washington Rabbit Hunting
« on: December 21, 2007, 07:59:47 AM »
I grew up in Iowa hunting cottontails; however, I've been frustrated in my attempts at finding a huntable rabbit population in Eastern WA.

Any ideas on where to look near Spokane?  :dunno:

Find an old apple orchard. dead apple trees and crop lands will hold lots of rabbit around you. maybe try go north of you up near chewelah, or come west a bit. Get out of the trees, find crops.

Good Tip. Thanks!

Hey guys.

Any word on a good hunting area for rabbits?

I was thinking about heading over to Eastern Washington next month along I90 and check out some of those Free to Hunt areas. Looks like sagebrush around farming and irrigation. Could be promising.

There's little pockets of them here and there but the rabbits of old were thinned out by disease.   I saw tons in the 80's.

They are on the upswing after many years of near absence.  With the number of protected raptors the few I saw during harvest will have a tough go.  Probably not enough around to make a trip but seeing some should not be a surprise.

Thanks for the info. I truly appreciate it. The fact that you saw a few gives me a small amount of hope. I think I am going to make the trip anyway for the hell of it. It will be fun either way.

Anyone know specific laws on staying overnight on Free to Hunt land? Of course I don't want to pop a tent for the night only to be chased off by authorities or property owners, but being able to would be nice. Just curious.

You need landowner permission to legally camp.  FFTH only allows day access for hunting.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I grew up farming in Moses Lake and used to always hunt cottontail along the main canal banks. Walking along the field side of the banks and returning along the top of the banks was my favorite technique.
