Three more for team Lamar.....all males.

I certainly couldn't kill a nice dog like the ones in the above pics, so this scurvy overgrown rat will have to do....guess a point is a point...... :chuckle: Thought it would win the lightest dog category, but it weighed in at a stunning 16.8lbs!

This nice male didn't really want to play the game. Started out with the bunny blues then after about 15 minutes I gave a howl to see if anything was around. He immediately answered so I gave him another howl. He returned with a challenge howl but I gave him a coyote yip and long howl. He shut up so we waited another 10 minutes or so to see if he was sneaking in. That didn't pan out so we circled around about a 1/4 mile and gave the bunny blues. After about 4 minutes I saw him just sitting there in the sagebrush 225 yrds watching in our direction. Gave a couple of squeaks and he started to move in, lost him in a draw so I kept squeaking every once in a while. Finally saw him about 150 yrds off peeking thru the sagebrush. Another squeak got him moving in, at 120 yrds I stopped him with a woof and dropped him. He was a fat healthy one with a good coat so we tubed him out. I think he came in out of curiosity or thought that another coyote was stilll around rather than being hungry and looking for a meal. Only coyote we saw or heard all day.

Nice big dog....my howling apparently sucks as I can't get anything to answer to it.  Odd for this time of year.  I plan to try and make a few sets tomorrow afternoon....been tied up lately.

That is a perfact specimen, I was curious if you have found that howling has been productive after a set is in the past?

I think howling is like any other type of calling, trying it from your pickup and then hoofing it in about a mile can produce two different results especially in areas with a high density of coyote hunters. I'm not going to rant on about road hunters.  :chuckle: Coyotes are only going to respond so long before they go quiet and it's during that responding time that hopefully you can hear them coming closer or if they are just going to sit and let you know they're there.  There's several schools of thoughts on when to howl, Either before after or during your set. Howling first thing can let you know if their are coyotes in the area and perk them up BUT some callers think you may be scaring some potential victims off. Howling afterwards is kind of like trying to recover after fumbling the ball in hopes that you can get an answer and get one to come in that wasn't interested in your distress calls, or see if there are any in the area. Howling in the middle may convince a coyote that another coyote has caught a meal and might come in to investigate which may be the same for howling first/last thing.  During mating season howling has a very good/better chance of bringing one in. I do get a lot more answers back than actual coyotes coming in to a howl but now is when howling should start producing more. The problem for me is that there are so many variables in any given set that I am undecided if one way is better or not. I've decided this year for any coyotes I spot in the far distance I'm going to howl and see what their responses are. For me howling is one of the hardest types of calling to do properly and am certainly not by any means a veteran at howling. There are a few guys on board here that could probably give classes on howling. I've rambled on enough, hope this helps.
