t/c new muzzle loader are u kidding me?
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:07:16 PM »
i talk to t/c today about a new ram rod for my black diamond xr the lady told me that they are putting out a new muzzle loader i thought cool until she said that its going to be called like the northwest explorer the crappy part is it will only use #11 caps which i am a huge musket cap fan but the worst thing is t/c firearms has put a 1:48 twist in the barrel all the new muzzleloaders are usually 1:28 the 1:48 won't stabilize a sabot worth hell she said it is for the conical shooters i told her most of the people still shooting them are the old hawken guys and such i think they will have a hard time selling it what do you guys think?

There are some really good conical bullets especially now that we are able to use jacketed bullets. I think the 1:48 twist will be fine. You could probably find some saboted bullets that would shoot ok as well.

i 100% agree with you but i still think it will have a hard time finding a market and i have shot conicals out of my 1:28 and they shoot just fine but i don't how many people will go out and buy a new muzzleloader to only shoot conicals

Keep in mind WA just changed our regs to allow sabots. What about ID, OR and MT. They have probably been working on this since before WA changed the regs.

Right. And speaking of Powerbelts, I think they should shoot good in a 1:48 twist. I didn't like them when only the lead ones were legal but now that we can use the jacketed ones I think they might be worth a try.

I really like a heavy conical. A 460-510gr conical will drop anything it hits.
Smoke em when ya see em!

Thats what I was thinking. Nipple should be interchangeable. Almost all of them are now.

thats what i thought i almost bought a break open traditions xt west that uses #11 caps but it comes with a red peice of paper that says do not replace with a musket cap because it will ruin  the action on the gun and mess up the intenal parts so no you can't always just change them out and yes i did ask the same question to the t/c lady and she said they are not interchangeable on there new rifle #11 only but you guys are right on some rifles like my cva elkhorn and black diamond xr all it was is replace a nipple in the diamond and a nipple and breech plug in the cva

I think I'll just stick to my T/C Black Diamond XTR.  Works great.  It's more accurate than I am.

Just wondering if anyone has bought T/C northwest explorer. I was looking at one yesterday for $305 @ ranch & home in kennewick. The guy said they wont stabilize sabots or pwrbelts. My T/C Hawkens shoots both fine w/ 1:48 twist. I'm wondering if it's my barrel length that's the differnce. I dont know what the NW explorer has but its diffently shorter.

I shot 410 Great Plains by Honady 6 or 7 years ago when I first started ML with my X-150..... They shot great with 1 in 28 twist..... The next year I switched to Power Belts in 295 and moved up to 130 gains of powder.... They shot even better and were a ton easier to load....  I don't see why they would make it 1 in 48 only.....  :dunno:  You would think they would make a 1 in 28 as well to satisfy all ends.... I've shot the 295 Power Belts out of my Dad's Hawken with 1 in 48 and they shot just as good as the 470 Maxi Hunter's From T/C.. But as stated earlier..... Maybe it's the longer barrel....  :dunno:  :twocents:

Rhino i follow allot with muzzloading and archery all the reviews that i have read say that round balls are great threw this gun but will not shoot sabots at all worth crap or most cons as well there is a few people that had o.k. accuracy with maxi balls and maxi hunters by t/c but thats about it.

I was looking at one of the T/C northwest explorer's yesterday at Sportco in fife and the guy at the counter said they were 1:28. they had a camo/stainless and a black synthetic/stainless for a little over $300 i think.

I shoot conicals out of my White with 1:24. It is extremely accurate.

To shoot lead accurately you do not need or want 130-140 grains powder, you score or melt the the side of the bullet and loose accuracy and velocity. Some guys use a over powder wad also. Try shooting lead conicals at 76-90 grains powder and you will probably be very pleased. Most M/L's will not burn 140gr powder in the barrel. Try laying a white sheet out in front of you about two feet and fire your rifle. If you find residue (unburned powder) on the sheet than you are not burning the charge in the barrel. Once the bullet leaves the barrel it don't care if the powder is still burning.
