Chesaw/Buckhorn ??
« on: October 03, 2009, 07:39:13 AM »
S-N-L's Grandfather has a place there and thinking of going over for the opener. Took a road trip last Sunday for a look see. His property butts the NF. Did a little scouting but did not have time to spend looking I would like to! Could not use the rig to drive any roads cause after a short hike my daughter went to sleep in it!!(she had done the Light The Night walk in Seattle the night before) Anyone care to share a little GENRAL info on the area in a PM? Just want to know so I can make a decision on making a move. Have hunted out of Conconully for 23 years but are over ran with ATVs now!  Thanks in advance,Confused!

There are deer there for sure. We hunted out of Chesaw in the NF for a few years  after our place burned. It can be pretty thick but there is always a few openings that make it quite huntable. I would think private land backing the NF is always a good thing. There will be whitetails and mule deer in the area and some nice one at that. Our small group only took a couple deer out of there in the 3-4 years we hunted it but there were a lot of deer shot by other camps in the area. We also a bear a year and one year some elk. Good luck.

I have been hunting that area along with the dry gulch area since i was 10yo lots of other hunters but there are a good number of deer although it wouldnt be my first choice. but if you have a private place it should be in the bag pretty much.

Thanks for the reponses.Think I have decided to take the trailer to Conconully for the opener and we can shoot over to Grndpa's from there. Can't stand the thought of a new spot on opening without prescouting time!!! If things look good then we can pullup stakes and make the move. Just got to resist the urge to blast the ATVs.  :mgun:LOL. Can't believe the would ride in between 2 RVs.  :bash:

I'm sorry you decided on Conconully...there aren't any deer there anymore. ;)
We have hunted there for a while too. I know what you mean about the quads but, we haven't had it be too big of a problem. Do you hunt the valley?
