.260 Rem and ammo
« on: October 04, 2009, 07:20:12 PM »
Guys and gals,

I should have my .260rem by tuesday evening!! :IBCOOL:

Anyway what are you guys running for ammo in yours???

I know I'll be smacking deer with it.   Thinking about a 125 nosler partition but might run a 120 nos balistic tip?

The only bullet I've loaded for my 260 is the 107gr smk. Its a target only rifle right now. If I was going to hunt with it I'd load 120gr TSX's

My daughter's uses 125 grn partitions, they are sub MOA and really do a great job on deer. I'm working up a load for mine right now and the best results so far are with the same but I'm still farting around with Berger VLD 130's, 120 TTSX/TSX, and 100 grain partitions. Hope to get the load work done this coming weekend.

My 6.5X55 swede LOVES the 120 grn TSX. One hole 5 shot group last time I was out.

MHWASH is working up a load for his, hopefully he'll chime in.

I've only had mine a couple of weeks now. It's a Ruger S/S with the standard barrel.

I'm shooting the 123 MK, and 120 B-tip using the same powder charge. Both land in the same one group at 100yds. I'm muzzy hunting this year, so hopefully the wife can bloody it on a buck this year.

I would stay away from the Balistic tip for deer hunting. I'd try the Accubond or the Partition.  :twocents:

What ever bullet you choose, I'd recommend staying on the heavy side (120gr on up). I put my 260 together for silhouettes and did pretty well out to 300 meters but at 400 and 500 meters the little 107's I shoot wont knock over the steel targets alot of the time. Most of the silhouette shooters at the P'Ell range shoot 260's, using a light bullet for under 300 meters and a load with a heavy for farther steel. In a lightweight rifle the 260 is hard to beat, alot of punch for little recoil.

I have the mountain rifle in .260 and it seems to shoot well with the 140 gr SST's, just worked up a load using H4831 and the groups were about and inch or so.  I shot a small 4 point wt buck with 120 gr ballistic tip last year and he took about 2 steps and piled up.  I think I lose a bit of accuracy with the rifle due to the 22 inch light weight barrel.  I think I will still play around with some different loads though to get a bit more accuracy out of it.  If any of you guys have other good loads lets hear.

I think the ballistic tip would be a good choice in the .260.  I prefer bonded bullets in the larger calibers and magnums.  I've shot 130 gr. ballistic tips out of my .270 win. for years, and have been very impressed on accuracy their ability to take down big game.  Lost a little more meat, but never lost an animal.  Many will argue, but that's my :twocents:

I think I lose a bit of accuracy with the rifle due to the 22 inch light weight barrel.
The only accuracy you could be losing due to the light barrel would be followup shots when the barrel is warm.

The only accuracy that really counts is the first cold barrel shot.  Shots 1-3 on light barrels should still be well within kill zone at ranges the cartridge is designed for.  Anything after that with a light barrel as the barrel gets warm will string out with any chambering.

If you let the barrel cool between paper punching shots, then you're apt to find that your barrel and loading is quite accurate.

Yes, heavier barrels are 'consistantly more accurate, shot after shot', but there is still the cold barrel shot/poi and a sweet spot through a shooting session.

I don't like B-tips. I've not used them in a 260 but in my 06 I used sst's once which are similar. They are just too explosive for my taste. I would like to see them perform on deer out of the 260 but I wont use them myself.

Like alot of folks I had bad experiences with NBT's but like most I was pushing them faster then they where designed for.
The NBT's are designed for muzzle velocities under 2900FPS. I'd think they should work pretty well in the 260.
