2009 muzzy bulls...
« on: October 09, 2009, 05:50:41 AM »
Set up camp this year in the 5th wheel for the first time. One in our party backed out because the early season was going to be to hot and dry for him. He thought we woul dget skinked because the woods were to noisy. Well he was wrong...
Saturday, woods were crowded as i have ever seen them. We went into some timber for a morning hike and by the time we were done 10-12 people had been through the same timber patch. I jumped a lone cow and watched her saunter away unharmed. We decided we needed to find somewhere nobody would go. So we went on the hell hike as we now call it because the 3 of us that went down came back up to the road 6 hours later hurting, but we ran a couple of groups of cows around, no bulls for day one and about 15 cows, all in all a pretty good day.
Sunday, woods were still crowded we hiked a few timber patches saw a nice forked horn deer, 2 cows and a calf and a bull that i had at 80 yards broadside in the timber that i really had no shot on, he was a nice 4 point but i am not going to fling lead out there on a prayer that i hit him. So i let him walk and i was in pursuit, i never caught up with him. Oh well there is always tomorrow.
Monday we went back to where we hunted on saturday and we hiked the timber patch again, brother got into a group with 5-6 cows and a bull that he couldn't pu eye guards on a 40 yards, it had a fork but he couldn't see eye guards so he let it walk. 3 hours later brothers best friend drops bull that brother couldn't put eye guards on because he saw them. Will post a pic at the end of the smallest blacktail/elk rack we have ever seen.
Tuesday back in the same timber patch brother jumps elk again but he has a 4 point bedded a 100 yards in front of him facing away (not a good shot). They wind him and they come straight to me, i shot it at 25-30 feet double lung, both animals went down in 20 yards, both double lung with Knight 50 cal. 95 grains of FF 777, knight lead 310 grain bullet. When you find a bullet that works why change.

Brother is a member on here he might chime in... Maybe not. He is an elk magnet. He was into these bulls both monday and tuesday but the wind was just not on his side.... Maybe today bro.

West side muzzleloader.
Best thing about it, i had a multi season tag. I will never pass on a legal bull.
I am happy with how the season played out. And thanks for the good words. We have been hunting muzzleloader for 7 years now so i was looking forward to going rifle hunting again but not now. I still have a late season ML deer tag so i still get to hunt with the guys.
