Blues in the snow!
« on: October 11, 2009, 01:19:21 AM »
My son and I went high today looking for blues. Started out walking some old roads when I thought I saw something in the air. I thought I was just imagining things because the temp read 43 degrees when we left the truck. The next thing you know we were in a full fledged snowstorm. Pretty cool, but none of it stuck. The temp dropped to 37 and the windchill made it feel a lot colder.

Did a lot of walking and ended up putting up three birds. The first two I almost unloaded my gun (semi-auto) as I got the bolt handle stuck on my glove as I was bringing the gun up. I did get a snap shot through the brush as the second one took off, but ended up missing. Our last stop of the day the dog dropped below me and was working the brush and I moved on down the ridge. I realized she wasn't with me anymore and beeped her to locate her and she was back down the ridge where we had first started. I beeped her again to get a location on her as I moved back and heard a bird flush. Sucks I didn't get to see her point or get a shot at the bird. Saw one ruffed on the way home, but he was way to skittish to let my son even get in shotgun range.

The only thing I did get today was a nice berry stain on the inside of my shirt. When were busting the brush I felt something wet on my chest, so I was feeling my shirt wondering where the wet feeling came from only to find out I was squishing the berry that fell inside my shirt. The berry crop is still good and even saw some fresh bear poop.

Thanks for the write up. Good reminder to be ready for any kind of weather out there.

Nice story.  I tracked one last weekend for the better part of a mile in the snow with no luck and his tracks disappearing at a ridgetop.  He was on a mission!
